Alma de la Tierra (Soul of the Land) is an evening-length piece
combining stylized dance techniques and dramatic action with a cast of
18 professional dancers/actors and children. The work utilizes
magic-realism (Latin America's primary literary movement) to create a
collage of images, movement and theatricality. Presented with elements
of fantasy and myth, Alma de la Tierra creates a world that is both
familiar and dreamlike. With the collaboration of set designers Robin
VanLear and Rosario Fernandez & Felix Diaz of Compania PLANETAZUL from
Mexico, costume design by Janet Bolick and lighting design by Deborah
Malcolm, Alma de la Tierra features the music of many Latin-American
composers including Astor Piazzolla, Inti Illimani, Susana Baca and Los
Van, as well as the poetry of Pablo Neruda and other regional artists.

The accomplished cast includes Tom and Susana Evert, Meghan Hass
(formerly of the Cleveland San Jose Ballet), Brian Murphy (Ohio Ballet
member), Mac Ngoc Hoang, (Dancing Wheels member), Tennille Craig, Taryn
Makaab (of South Africa) Aimee Zannoni, as well as featured soloist,
New York dancer/actor Javier De Cordoba (former member of Ririe-Woodbury
Dance Company of Utah and DanzAmerica Company of Venezuela.) Also making
an appearance will be supporting actors/dancers Lynna Metrisin, Mary
Kukich, Kim Sethna and selected children from "arts in education"
residencies.

Special events are planned surrounding the event beginning at 6:30 p.m.
on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening, including a silent art auction
and food catered by Luchita’s Restaurant. Call Director of Marketing,
Jeff Syroney at 216.631.2727 ext. 203 for more information.

Alma de la Tierra is funded by The Ohio Arts Council, The Cleveland
Foundation, The George Gund Foundation, The Kulas Foundation and
individual contributions as well as the Cleveland Foundation/BASICS
program. Cleveland Public Theatre is one of 17 arts organizations
participating in BASICs; a five-year program of the Cleveland
Foundation. BASICs organizations receive operating support, customized
technical assistance and grants to help build capacity to manage the
necessary risk-taking of their art forms. Additional funds will be
raised through a silent auction and benefit hosted by the board of

A new place called "The Enclave: Coffeeshop & Video Rental" is opening on
Erie Street in downtown Willoughby (a few storefronts away from Arabica) and
is looking for people to fill their stage and their walls. They told me
that they are going to be officially open next week and want to have live
entertainment every night... musicians, jugglers, poets, drama... anything
you want to do, they are willing to book. In addition, they would like to
feature fresh artwork, so painters, photographers etc. with work to display
are also encouraged to stop by. I'm not sure what the rest of the details
are (like their phone number if any yet), but if you're nearby, stop in and
introduce yourself to get on the roster. Looks like it's got the potential
to be a very happening spot!

Plus: Don't Forget! - Robin Stone, Andrew Rothman & David Flood @
Chagrin Valley Little Theater Benefit this Saturday night (6/30)!
$7 - 8-10 pm - 440-247-8955 for reservations

See you there!

Andrew
