Porthouse Theatre has partnered up with a very special organization for their production of Steel Magnolias.  Wigs For Kids is Porthouse's community partner for this touching comedy.  Wigs For Kids is a non-profit organization that creates custom-made hair replacement systems for children who have lost their hair due to illness or burns.  These hair replacement systems are often made from hair that has been donated to Wigs For Kids from generous individuals.  Porthouse is fortunate to have several individuals willing to donate their precious locks.  Opening night, Friday, July 6, two young ladies who have already cut their hair will be presenting it to Wigs For Kids.  Porthouse Sound Designer, Annalise Albright will be cutting her hair onstage before the curtain for donation.  Kelly Patterson will be donating her two feet of cut hair to Wigs For Kids on Sunday, July 8 before the show.  These special women will receive two complimentary tickets to Steel Magnolias for their generosity.  You can help Wigs For Kids by purchasing a ticket to Steel Magnolias opening weekend, July 5 - 8.  $4 of every full-priced ticket will go directly to Wigs For Kids.  For tickets call 1-800-262-9444 or 330-929-4416.  I hope you can join us for this exciting weekend.  Porthouse Theatre: Everyone's Favorite Place to Play!

Dubbed "nothing short of stunning" by New York Magazine and "an amazing piece of theatre" by the New York Post, THE LARAMIE PROJECT is a breathtaking theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink, and the heights of compassion we are all also capable of. It is a tale about the gulf between ignorance and understanding, and how tolerance can overcome hate. In October of 1998, 21-year-old openly gay student Matthew Shepard was beaten savagely and left to die tied to a fence in the middle of a lonely prairie outside of Laramie, Wyoming. The two men convicted of his murder would later claim that Matthew's sexual orientation was a factor in the brutal and deadly attack. Mois?s Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie and conducted more than 200 interviews with the people there over the course of a year and a half in the aftermath of Shepard's death and during the trial of the two men accused of killing him. THE LARAMIE PROJECT is the result of this extraordinary journey - and a deeply moving theatrical experience. Ohio playwright who is working to bring to life an original contemporary musical. I'm looking for a composer/collaborator to write the score. I've worked on the script (thinking it would be a play) on and off for the for the last four years, but I've recently decided it will be more impactful as a musical. This script is an adaptation of another play, which was presented five years ago in a staged reading (directed by me.) In addition to writing the play, I also am writing the libretto and the lyrics. However, I'm not a total control freak. I'm looking for a collaborator-partner who can bring a great deal of musical creativity to the project. In my mind, the play is suited to a variety of music styles: rock, blues, reggae, Latin. There could be more. I am open for suggestions. Right now, this is a part-time project. I have financial responsibilities, so I also have a "real job." There are also "real" issues, business issues to be discussed, and I need to find someone who is as committed as I am to getting this work produced and noticed. There's also an opportunity to produce and release the music separately. Whatever happens, it's important that this partner and I work out the details to maintain the rights to whatever is eventually produced/performed/recorded. Something about me: I have more than 20 years' experience as a journalist and writer. I've worked at the Buffalo News, Kansas City Star, Detroit Free Press and had PR jobs at the University of Southern California and a pr firm in Detroit. I received a Press Club of Cleveland Excellence in Journalism Award for some magazine pieces I wrote. I have a B.A. from Indiana University (Bloomington) and an M.S. from Columbia University. Both degrees are in journalism. In hindsight, I probably should have majored in theater, but that's another story. To reply, please e-mail me at tempest1013 at aol.com. Thanks. Fulton, Jr. DISCOVERING CHARACTER THROUGH ACTION July 23 ? August 27, 2001 Perhaps the most common mistake an actor makes is to imagine his or her character in ?character? pajamas ? and then try to climb into them. A theatrical character evolves out of the tension between text, subtext and action. Understanding the balancing act that makes up those tensions is the work of the theatre artist. We all reach for characterizations that sparkle with clarity and definition. When we do, we can say, ?I?ve found the mask.? But every play requires a different kind of mask. In Chekhov, it is the juxtaposition of subtext and words. In Shakespeare, it is the precise production of the sound, pace and structure of language. In Wilde, it is the suppression of raging emotion through wit and societal ritual. But whatever the form, the play is DISCOVERED ? not planned. It grows out of the muscles of mind, body and voice and rises to create an imaginary soul, whose brief existence is entirely believable. This workshop will focus on the demands of the play?s form and help the actor discover vital actions that define character and illuminate the play. Exercise and Scene work. The workshop meets 6 Monday (or Tuesday*) evenings from 6:30 ? 9:30 and 2 Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Monday workshops will meet in the Eldred Theatre on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. 2001 Summer Acting Workshops

Taught by Thomas Q. Fulton, Jr. =

DISCOVERING CHARACTER THROUGH = ACTION

July 23 – August 27, = 2001

Perhaps the most common mistake an actor makes is to imagine his = or her character in ‘character’ pajamas – and then try to = climb into them.

A theatrical character evolves out of the tension between text, = subtext and action.  Understanding = the balancing act that makes up those tensions is the work of the theatre = artist.  We all reach for = characterizations that sparkle with clarity and definition.  When we do, we can say, “I’ve found the = mask.”  But every play requires a different kind of = mask.  In Chekhov, it is the = juxtaposition of subtext and words.  In = Shakespeare, it is the precise production of the sound, pace and structure of = language.  In Wilde, it is the = suppression of raging emotion through wit and societal ritual.  But whatever the form, the play is DISCOVERED – = not planned.  It grows out of = the muscles of mind, body and voice and rises to create an imaginary soul, = whose brief existence is entirely believable.

This workshop will focus on the demands of the play’s form = and help the actor discover vital actions that define character and illuminate the play.  =

Exercise and Scene work.

The workshop meets 6 Monday (or Tuesday*) evenings from 6:30 = – 9:30 and 2 Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.   The Monday workshops will meet in the Eldred Theatre on the = campus of Case Western Reserve University.  The Saturday workshops will meet in the Summer House at Nepenthe Artist’s Retreat in West Farmington (directions will be sent when = you sign up)

DATES:    Mondays*  July 23, = 30;  August 6, 13, 20 an 27.  =

Thanks. Message-ID: DOBAMA THEATRE IS LOOKING FOR A FEW PEOPLE WILLING TO GET UP EARLY! On Friday, July 13, Channel 3 WKYC will do a live piece from Dobama Theatre located at 1846 Coventry Road in Cleveland Heights, Ohio on their early morning show. The piece will help promote the 80s Benefit Dance-A-Thon to be held that night at the theatre from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., which will raise funds to help the cast of the Dobama Night Kitchen Smach-Hit, Angst:84 by Toni K. Thayer, go to New York City to participate in the New York International Film Festival. So, for Channel 3, we are staging an 80s Dance-A-Thon preview, and we need people willing to be at the theatre in "80s Costume" by 5:15 a.m. on the morning of Friday, July 13, to dance for the cameras. This will be a big help, and there will be coffee, juice and bagels in it for any willing to do this - as well as the undying gratitude of all involved. If you are willing, please call Suzanne Ledel Miller at Dobama Theatre at 216-932-6838 no later than Wednesday, July 11, to be a part of the event. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com From suzanneledel at hotmail.com Tue Jul 3 14:38:27 2001 From: suzanneledel at hotmail.com (Suzanne Ledel Miller) Date: Tue Jul 3 14:38:27 2001 Subject: [NEOhioPAL]THE LARAMIE PROJECT TO OPEN DOBAMA'S SEASON Message-ID: For Immediate Release Contact: Suzanne Ledel Miller Phone: 216-932-6838 Email: suzanneledel at hotmail.com Web Site: www.dobama.org THE LARAMIE PROJECT by Mois?s Kaufman WILL OPEN DOBAMA THEATRE'S 2001-2002 SEASON Dobama Theatre, 1846 Coventry Road in Cleveland Heights, will proudly present the Cleveland Premiere of Mois?s Kaufman's extraordinary THE LARAMIE PROJECT, September 14 through October 6, 2001. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.
