For Immediate Release
Workshop Players will open it's 54th season with William Inge's classic
American drama, "Picnic."
Set in a small town outside of Kansas City in the mid 1950's, it's the story
of a group of people preparing doe the annual Labor Day picnic everyone is
going about their business when Mrs. Potts (Joyce Parks) hires a
down-on-his-luck drifter (Ryan Downey) to do some chores in exchange for
breakfast. Without meaning to, he brings out some of the secret dreams,
desires and prejudices of the town's residents and ends up falling for the
girlfriend (Rachel Endrezzi) of the only person who ever treated him decently
(Matt Kiedrowski).
Director Mike Leuszler notes that "This play is about desire vs. social
expectations. In the 50's, America was a lot different than it is now. You
were expected to conform to certain standards and behave in certain ways. It
was almost like high school with the amount of peer pressure and cliquish
behavior that was around. And many things we take for granted now were
considered taboo, if not illegal back then, like premarital sex and adult
themes in literature, at least in some states."
Also in the cast are: Melissa Crum, Sarah Boesger, Nick Hoy, Dave Cotton, Joy
Marling, Krista Phillips and Kathy Whitmore. James Nunamaker is assistant
director.
Performance dates are September 6, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 8:00 p.m. There
will also be matinee performances on September 16 & 23 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets
