Cleveland, Ohio. The Cleveland Theater Collective announced today that =
its=20
first annual Danny Morris Equity Contract Award has been granted to the=20
Cleveland Shakespeare Festival. The award of $2,000 will enable the=20
Cleveland Shakespeare Festival to hire a member of the Actors Equity=20
Association, the union for professional stage actors, to perform in its =
2002=20
repertory season, which will include productions of Shakespeare's As You =
Like=20
It and Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2. =20
    The Cleveland Shakespeare Festival was selected for this award out =
of a=20
pool of nine smaller to mid-sized Cleveland area theaters who applied =
for=20
this first-time honor. The winning application best met the criteria=20
established for the award: 1) that the funds be used to underwrite a =
new and=20
otherwise unsubsidized performing opportunity for a local professional =
actor;=20
2) at a theater that has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to =
increasing=20
professionalization; 3) in a project that supports or explores the =
values of=20
tolerance and diversity. A committee consisting of two representatives =
of=20
the Actors Equity Association, two representatives of non-competing =
theaters,=20
and a representative of the Cleveland Theater Collective made the =
selection. =20
    The Cleveland Shakespeare Festival, which was founded in 1998, has=20
offered four summers of free, outdoor Shakespeare to the Cleveland =
community.=20
 Dedicated to casting extraordinarily diverse performing ensembles, the=20
Festival has also had a history of exploring gender roles in new and =
exciting=20
ways. Says Larry Nehring, one of the Festival's co-artistic directors, =
"With=20
this award, we look forward to raising the bar in years to come as we =
build a=20
core company combining Equity and Non-Equity professionals with members =
of=20
the community who wish to broaden their training and experience. We =
feel=20
this slow, deliberate growth has been important to build a solid =
following=20
within the community." Funds for the Danny Morris Equity Contract =
Award=20
were raised at a benefit sponsored by the Cleveland Theater Collective =
on=20
April 23, 2001. The Cleveland Theater Collective was formed last year as =
a=20
support group to promote the professional development of Cleveland area=20
theater artists. The new award is named after Cleveland actor Danny =
Morris,=20
who was an active member of the Actors Equity Association, the American=20
Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the Screen Actors Guild =
and=20
who died in September 1998. In addition to launching the award, the=20
Collective has organized workshops, discussion forums, a newsletter, and =
a=20
website (www.ctcollective.org). Funding for the Collective's programs =
comes=20
from The Cleveland Foundation and the George Gund Foundation. Great =
Lakes=20
Theater Festival serves as the Collective's fiscal agent, and the =
Cleveland=20
Play House donates space for workshops and other events.
