CAIN PARK ANNOUNCES 2002 THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS
AUDITIONS SCHEDULED FEBRUARY 22-24, 2002

Cain Park announces its 2002 summer theatrical productions -- Theatre
Artistic Director Victoria Bussert will direct WEST SIDE STORY in the Evans
Amphitheater and the area premiere of AVENUE X in the Alma Theater.

Shakespeare=B9s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City i=
n
WEST SIDE STORY (based on a conception of Jerome Robbins, book by Arthur
Laurents), as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between
warring street gangs, the =B3American=B2 Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.
Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one
of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our
time. WEST SIDE STORY=B9s exciting, sophisticated score (music by Leonard
Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) is often considered Broadway=B9s
finest, with songs that have become part of the nation=B9s musical heritage:
Something=B9s Coming, Maria, Tonight, America, I Feel Pretty, and Somewhere t=
o
name several. Music director for Cain Park=B9s production is Larry Hartzell.
PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE: June 20, 21, 22, 23 (closed performance, invited
audience only), 27, 28, 29, 30, July 3, 5, 6, 7
(sign-interpreted/audio-described). Evans Amphitheater, 8:30pm.

AVENUE X (concept, book and lyrics by John Jiler; music and lyrics by Ray
Leslee) is an a cappella doo-wop musical set in the Brooklyn of 1963 where
Italian-Americans stay on one side of the street and African-Americans on
the other. Volatile issues and effectively nostalgic rock-and-roll history
emerge when two youthful singers from different sides of the street put
together an act for a talent show at the legendary Fox Theater. AVENUE X i=
s
the only musical to have received the Richard Rodgers Development and
Production Awards and the Kleban Librettist=B9s Award. It began as a worksho=
p
at the Eugene O=B9Neill National Music Theatre Conference followed by an
extended run Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in the mid-1990s. Music
director for Cain Park=B9s production is Nancy Gantose-Maier.
PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE: August 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17,
18 (sign-interpreted/audio-described). Alma Theater, 8pm.
