At Actors' Summit, the Christmas ritual is a secular one, but no less
powerful. In a reprise of Dylan Thomas' "A Child's Christmas in Wales,"
director Neil Thackaberry's 14-member ensemble also makes you ache with
nostalgia, but for the homier celebrations of holiday meals and extended
families.
Peter Voinovich is wonderful as Dylan - dark and rumpled, poetry
flowing from him like it was mother's milk - reminiscing about his childhood
holiday gatherings in Swansea, Wales. It's a sentimental journey that
conjures both the memorable and the traditional of annual family gatherings:
mealtime mishaps, gifts, stories and songs from beloved uncles and aunts.
The ensemble evokes a lovely, natural family chemistry. As Dylan's
father, Chuck Richie has a wry, poetic eloquence, while Mother (Paula
Duesing) growls and fusses over her burned turkey. Frank Jackman has a
delightful music hall number as a capering Uncle Gwyn, and Kari Kandel's
soprano is so sweet in the final number, it's like a benediction.
Simple but effective, brimming with good feeling, "A Child's Christmas
in Wales" triumphs by making the everyday seem sacred.
       Linda Eisenstein, Cleveland Plain Dealer

Eisenstein is a playwright in Cleveland.
