Cleveland Public Theatre DanceWorks Series 2002

Join CPT for something different as we present DanceWorks 2002, a dramatic
festival of rhythm and movement that invites regional, national and
international dance companies to share with the Cleveland community a unique
look at the best in cutting edge contemporary and modern dance.

Starting This Weekend:
An Evening of Tap and Hip Hop
January 25 – 27, 2002
Mainstage Theatre

CPT presents an electric evening of Tap, Hip-Hop, Turntablism and Breaking
featuring the all female Chicago based tap company Rhythm Iss... and Ohio’s
leading Hip-Hop breakers Ground F/X B-Boyz Squad and IllStyle Rockers in an
explosion of non-stop dancing as well as a tribute to old school Hip-Hop.
Talkback with artists to follow each performance.

SAFMOD in Requiem Descending
February 1 - 3, 2002
Gordon Square Theatre

Requiem Descending uses original dance, music, visual artistry and text to
evoke a journey of loss, acceptance and coming together in hope of ending
the vicious cycle of devastation.

Kaeja d’Dance in Resistance

February 8 – 10, 2002

Mainstage Theatre

A startling holocaust related contemporary dance that commemorates Jewish
defiance against the Nazis. Over the past seven years, choreographer Allen
Kaeja has been embedded in research and development of dances which concern
his father’s life in Poland prior to the outbreak of World War II.
Resistance lets loose an ensemble of six stunning performers who vividly
portray the struggles inherent of humanity. On a sparse stage, it is solely
the dancers’ bodies and four benches that create an environment of violence,
intimacy and reflection.

Fujiwara Dance Inventions In Sumida River
February 15 & 16, 2002
Mainstage Theatre

As a mother grieving the loss of her son, the intense Denise Fujiwara
creates a primal body mask of pain to Natsu Nakajima’s version of the 15th
century Noh play. Toronto’s Fujiwara, an experienced dancer of considerable
reputation, peels layers off her own ancestry with a butoh-style performance
of depth, fragility and dream-like slowness. This production runs for two
nights only.

Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theatre in Aria

February 22 – 24
Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theatre presents Aria, an evening of new and
revived contemporary dance works. Krislyn World makes her company debut as
choreographer in Read Matthew, a dance inspired by the biblical scripture
Matthew 11:28. Also on the program is the newest dance by CCDT founding
artistic director Michael Medcalf, Aria, which depicts an intense longing
for companionship and love. The company will also perform Push, an
individual's journey through, then beyond, social structure, choreographed
by founding company member Paloma McGregor.

Food For Thought
March 1 – 3
Mainstage Theatre

CPT, DANCECleveland and Cleveland State University present the 5th Food For
Thought Project. Local professional choreographers join together in a
workgroup of peers to explore new directions in the creative process. The
result is a breathtaking example of how collaboration and compassion creates
art. Admission to the event is the donation of 3-5 non-perishable food
items. The collected food is donated to the Cleveland Food Bank to offer
hunger relief in our community.
