Cleveland Public Theatre DanceWorks Series 2002
An Evening of Tap and Hip Hop
Featuring Rhythm Iss

An Evening of Tap and Hip-Hop opens the 2002 DanceWorks Series on Friday,
January 25, 2002 at 8:00 p.m. and runs through Sunday, January 27, 2002. A
special talkback panel discussion detailing the history of Hip-hop and Tap
will be held following each of the performances. All performances will begin
at 8:00 p.m. with Sunday’s matinee at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 and
$10.00 for seniors and students. An Evening of Tap and Hip-Hop begins the
fourth year of this six-week festival of dance known as Cleveland Public
Theatre’s DanceWorks Series. A special DanceWorks Pass is available for only
$75.00 and includes admission to the entire series. For reservations or
information about the DanceWorks Series please call 216.631.2727.

The DanceWorks Series opens with three different dance companies combining
forces to present a diversified examination of the art of tap and hip-hop.
The evening’s events will feature performances by Rhythm Iss…, a Chicago
based professional female tap company founded in 1995 who undertakes the
task of preserving the history and authenticity of rhythm tap and to educate
and entertain audiences world-wide. Tap styles include Jazz Tap, R&B,
Hip-Hip and Acapella, all of which incorporate different energies and subtle
movement styles. Since the conception of Rhythm Iss…, they have been
fortunate enough to perform and teach all over the United States as well as
overseas. Command performances and workshops have been given in places such
as Michigan, Pennsylvania, California and Germany.

The second group, IllStyle Rockers was founded in 1994 by Forrest
"Getemgump" Web, Dre "Live" Borders, Dome "FX" Cameron, and Bobby "Blaze"
Wolfe. Recent additions to the group include M.C. Suave and DJ Besto. The
Group is dedicated to preserving and enhancing hip-hop culture through
public performances, masterclasses, and lecture-demonstrations. The primary
focus of the group is breaking, but they are committed to maintaining a true
representation of hip-hop culture with uprocking, turntablism, writing,
emceeing, beatboxing, and music production. Members of the group are based
in New York City, NY and Akron, OH. IllStyle has opened concerts for several
national acts as well as having taught/hosted masterclasses, workshops, and
lecture-demonstrations at many different schools and institutions.

Ground F/X B-Boyz Squad remains faithful to the fundamentals of hip-hop
while experimenting with different aspects of movement introducing
gymnastics and complex word play into their performances. The group
regularly participates in "battles" or competitions, performing live
showcases, and teaching the foundations of breaking in Cleveland, New York,
Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Dayton. The group has performed as the opening
act for such hip-hop artists as Ja-Rule, Raekwon, GZA, Ghostface, KRS-One,
and Black Eyed Peas. All of the members of the group are instructors for
the hip-hop educational programs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and
Museum as well as regularly teach students ranging from elementary to high
school including visually-impaired students at the Cleveland Sight Center.

CPT developed the DanceWorks Series four years ago in an effort to provide
Cleveland audiences the opportunity to witness the power and beauty of
regional dance companies. This season the DanceWorks series broadens its
scope to include national and international acts as well. In October of
2000, Northern Ohio Live Magazine awarded Cleveland Public Theatre the 2000
Award of Achievement in the Field of Dance.
