CLEVELAND PUBLIC THEATRE PRESENTS

2002 AWARD WINNING DANCEWORKS SERIES

SAFMOD in

Requiem Descending

Gordon Square Theatre
February 1, 2 and 3, 2002

Don't miss the second week of Cleveland Public Theatre's Award Winning
DanceWork Series with CPT Resident Company SAFMOD (Sub Atomic Frequency
Modulation OverDose) in Requiem Descending. Performances are on Friday,
February 1, and Saturday, February 2, 2002 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, February
3, 2002 at 3:00p.m. Tickets are $15.00 and $10.00 for seniors and students.
A special DanceWorks Pass is available for only $50.00 and includes
admission to the entire series. For reservations or information about the
DanceWorks Series please call 216.631.2727.

Requiem Descending uses original dance, music, visual artistry and sparse
text to evoke a journey of acceptance as Americans discover how to come
together during a time of war. Choreographer Young Park comments: “The
production is dedicated to processing the events surrounding September 11th,
a responsibility we are privileged to shoulder as artists for ourselves and
for the sake of the public audience.”

In a gesture of unity and tolerance, SAFMOD is inviting multicultural
performers from various traditions (Indian Dance, African Dance, American
Breakdance, Brazilian Capoiera, Hispanic Dance, Asian Dance…) to participate
in the final section of the show.

Requiem Descending explores the pain and loss resulting from recent human
tragedies. SAFMOD’s co-directors, choreographer Young Park and composer Neil
Chastain have been actively developing this evening-length work since
September. Performed in three parts, “Requiem for the Fallen,” “Exorcism”
and “Atonement/Exultation,” the full-length multimedia concert presents
original choreography, music, costume, set and spoken words. Requiem for
the Fallen’s somber tones confront mourning and the act of remembering while
extensively drawing from the Japanese Butoh dance tradition. The powerful
Exorcism movement deals with the individual being disconnected from the
collective while expelling our demons of sorrow, grief and isolationism.
Atonement/Exultation offers hope through unity and seeks to break us from
the cycle of devastation.

Composer Neil Chastain is expanding the nature of SAFMOD’s music/dance
collaboration. He will not only compose original electronic music and
accompany it with live hand drums, he will also conduct an ensemble of
improvising musicians to perform his scored arrangement live.

Set and costumes are designed by collaborating visual artists Alison Egan
and Mark Sugiuchi with collaborating verbal artist Ezra Houser scripting a
poetic narrative accompaniment.

CPT developed the DanceWorks Series four years ago in an effort to provide
Cleveland audiences the opportunity to witness the power and beauty of
regional dance companies. This season the DanceWorks series broadens its
scope to include national and international acts as well. In October of
2000, Northern Ohio Live Magazine awarded Cleveland Public Theatre the 2000
Award of Achievement in the Field of Dance.
