Cesear's Forum presents Eugene Ionesco’s THE CHAIRS at
Playhouse Square

Cesear's Forum is pleased to announce it will be
presenting Eugene Ionesco’s absurdist play, THE
CHAIRS, at Kennedy's Down Under, Playhouse Square
Center, Cleveland, Ohio. A befuddled romp by an
elderly couple setting up chairs to entertain unseen
guests is as preposterous as it is poignant. The
comedy stems from the absurdity, the absurdity from
life experienced, its suffering and struggle. Giving
dramatic form to both the comic and tragic aspects of
a situation is a hallmark of the “Theatre of the
Absurd,” and Eugene Ionesco was one of the movement’s
principle proponents.

With Punch and Judy characteristics, veteran actors
Glenn and Jean Colerider perform their offstage
husband and wife roles with less verve than their
onstage counterparts. Both appeared last season in the
Cesear’s Forum production of James Prideaux’s LAUGHTER
IN THE SHADOW OF THE TREES.

Eugene Ionesco gained international acclaim in the
1950’s and 1960’s and was considered a leader in a new
wave of postwar drama. As an experimenter in avante-
garde drama, Ionesco created fantasies that avoided
realistic imitation and instead used symbol and
language to penetrate a deeper level of meaning. His
plays include: THE BALD SOPRANO, THE LESSON, THE
KILLER, RHINOCEROS and EXIT THE KING, to name a few.

THE CHAIRS, March 8th through April 13th, is being
presented as part of the Cesear’s Forum
three-production 2002 season, available through
subscription for just $36.00. The other plays include
August Strindberg’s THE STRONGER and PLAYING WITH
FIRE,
July 19th through August 24th, as well as Lillian
Hellman’s THE WATCH (originally entitled WATCH ON THE
RHINE), November 8th through December 14th.

Cesear's Forum is dedicated to presenting
unconventional, new or lesser-known plays to Northeast
Ohio at affordable prices. The company performs at
Kennedy’s Down Under (literally under the Ohio
Theatre), an intimate venue with close proximity to
the stage action (no seat is more than 35 feet from
the stage) at the Playhouse Square Center.

THE CHAIRS, March 8th through April 13th, Kennedy’s
Down Under, Playhouse Square, 1501 Euclid Avenue,
Cleveland, Friday & Saturdays at 8pm. Single tickets
at $15.00. Call Tickets.com at (216) 241-6000.
Subscription packages at $36.00. Call the Cesear’s
Forum office at (330) 405-3045.
