CLEVELAND PUBLIC THEATRE PRESENTS

2002 AWARD WINNING DANCEWORKS SERIES

Kaeja d’Dance in

Resistance

A Startling Holocaust Related Modern Dance

That Commemorates Jewish Defiance Against the Nazis

Mainstage Theatre
February 8, 9 and 10, 2002

Canadian dance company Kaeja d’Dance presents Resistance on Friday, February
8 and Saturday, February 9, 2002 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 10, 2002
at 3:00p.m. Tickets are $15.00 and $10.00 for seniors and students. Kaeja d’
Dance in Resistance begins the fourth year of CPT’s six-week festival of
dance known as the DanceWorks Series. A special DanceWorks Pass is available
for only $75.00 and includes admission to the entire series. For
reservations or information about the DanceWorks Series please call
216.631.2727.

Kaeja d’Dance is a Toronto based, award winning modern dance ensemble led by
Allen Kaeja, a Jewish choreographer on faculty at the National Ballet of
Canada. The group comes to CPT with a powerful piece entitled Resistance,
which chronicles the struggle that took place in defiance of Nazi
occupation. Resistance lets loose an ensemble of six stunning performers who
vividly portray the struggles inherent of humanity. On a sparse stage, it is
solely the dancers’ bodies and four benches that create an environment of
violence, intimacy and reflection.

“Resistance is about moving forward; about realizing, despite internal and
external obstacles, the need to preserve and progress. Ultimately it is work
about triumph” says Allen Kaeja. The driving force behind Resistance is to
discover how people can transform the losses, anguish and pain into strength
and commitment to community. This full-evening work is the culmination of
five previous holocaust-based works by Allen Kaeja. Kaeja’s innovative style
is cultivated through the creation process, using a combination of Contact
Dance and Structured Innovations. Through clear direction and imagery from
the choreographer, the dancers become collaborators in the creation of the
movement vocabularies.

Kaeja’s work dealing with the Holocaust began with the Old Country Trilogy,
completed in 1995. The piece grew out of stories inspired by his father and
family friends in Poland who survived the Holocaust. In 1996, he was
commissioned to create Zummel, which explored ghetto life during World War
II. The dance evokes the first day of families being uprooted from their
homes. In 1997, Danceworks of Toronto presented Court-Yard. This work dealt
with the relationships of five individuals after months of forced
confinement inside the ghetto walls. These works eventually became striking
dance films that have toured festivals world-wide. Witnessed won second
place at IMZ Germany and was declared the winner of the acclaimed Schindler’
s List of Dance Films by the San Francisco Bay Guardian.

CPT developed the DanceWorks Series four years ago in an effort to provide
Cleveland audiences the opportunity to witness the power and beauty of
regional dance companies. This season the DanceWorks series broadens its
scope to include national and international acts as well. In October of
2000, Northern Ohio Live Magazine awarded Cleveland Public Theatre the 2000
Award of Achievement in the Field of Dance.
