CLEVELAND PUBLIC THEATRE PRESENTS

2002 AWARD WINNING DANCEWORKS SERIES

Fujiwara Dance Inventions in

Sumida River

Mainstage Theatre
February 15 and 16, 2002

Cleveland Public Theatre presents international dance company Fujiwara Dance
Inventions for two nights only. The company will perform a haunting
full-length Butoh performance entitled Sumida River. The dance is a
contemporary interpretation of a famous 15th century Japanese Noh drama
about one woman’s spiritual and emotional transformation during a search for
her lost child. Sumida River runs for two nights only on Friday, February 15
and Saturday, February 16, 2002 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 and $10.00
for seniors and students. A special DanceWorks Pass is available for only
$75.00 and includes admission to the entire series. For reservations or
information about the DanceWorks Series please call 216.631.2727.

Sumida River was commissioned by Denise Fujiwara, founder of Fujiwara Dance
Inventions, from revered choreographer and Butoh master Natsu Nakajima in
1993. Inspired by the renowned 15th century noh play, Sumidagawa by
Motomasa, Sumida River tells the story of a mother’s search for her child
after he is kidnapped and sold into slavery. As his grief-stricken mother
searches the country for her son, the young boy dies and is buried by the
side of the Sumida River. When she finally finds her son’s grave, she is
reunited with his spirit and her anguish is transformed into a deep sorrow.
The play closes with the merged voices of mother, the onstage chorus and the
ghost of the lost boy.

Noh is a highly stylized form of dance theatre, which involves masked dance,
drama, music and song. Noh dance is not of the open, leaping variety but is
a closed, sedate dance of the soul, closely related to the floor of the
stage. In Japanese it is referred to as MAI, a sacred, internal dance
emphasizing upper body and arm movement rather than ODORI , the more common
word for dance. Denise Fujiwara has not attempted to narrate the story of
Sumida River but has sought to approach the core of the dance, the MAI, in a
contemporary way.

The Butoh style of dance is relatively young with a thirty-seven year
history as an avant-garde form of dance theater, and as such it continues to
defy definition. The word itself refers to the dance of a primarily
agricultural society: Bu means dance and toh means to stamp the ground.
(Precursors to traditional Japanese dance included agricultural rituals in
which such stamping served to help "lock" a divinity into the ground to
ensure a good crop.) Since its birth, Butoh has attempted to challenge the
restraints and social conventions of contemporary Japan, by continually
experimenting, not only with content but with the very modes of expression.
To date, there are over 30 established troupes, including Fujiwara Dance
Inventions, all as divorced from traditional Japanese Noh and Kabuki theater
as they are from Western modern dance.

Denise Fujiwara is one of the most diverse talents to evolve on the Candian
Dance scene, and is a sought after choreographer, teacher, dancer and
actress. After graduating with honors at York University she became one of
the founders of T.I.D.E. (Toronto Independent Dance Enterprise). As an
artistic director, she was instrumental in the creation of a diverse body of
work for the now-defunct but still notorious company that danced across
Canada for ten years. In 1991, Fujiwara founded Fujiwara Dance Inventions
and undertook commissions for a variety of companies including Young People’
s Theatre, Nightwood Theatre and Tapestry Music Theatre.

In addition to her career as a solo dance artist, Ms. Fujiwara works in film
and television. Her performance in CBC Television’s Inside Stories, Dance to
Remember, garnered her a monination for Best Actress from the Manitoba
Motion Picture Industry Association. Walls, a documentary about her life and
work by filmmaker Jeremy Podeswa, produced by CBC Sunday Arts &
Entertainment won the 1995 Gemini Award for Best Performing Arts Program.

CPT developed the DanceWorks Series four years ago in an effort to provide
Cleveland audiences the opportunity to witness the power and beauty of
regional dance companies. This season the DanceWorks series broadens its
scope to include national and international acts as well. In October of
2000, Northern Ohio Live Magazine awarded Cleveland Public Theatre the 2000
Award of Achievement in the Field of Dance.
