One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, this
moving study of the Impressionist painter, Georges
Seurat, won a Pulitzer Prize for it's examination of
art and the artist.
The show opened in 1984 and ran on Broadway for 639
performances. It won several Tony awards. Stephen
Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics while James Lapine
directed the Broadway production and also wrote the
book.
The musical is based upon George Seurat's famous
picture "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande
Jatte." Act One takes place in 1884 while Georges
toils on his epic creation while Lapine and Sondheim
examine the artistic process and on Seurat's
relationship with girl friend Dot.
Act Two takes place 100 years later and finds that
Georges Seurat's American great grandson is still
having the same problems of separating art from life.
Also an artist, modern George is burned out and
uncertain of the path he must take to maturity.
Sunday in the Park with George features an ensemble of
strong singing actors. Each has her own solos and time
in the sun. There are several ensemble songs and
actors are always on stage. It is a challenging score
that demands both talent and dedication. This play
has been produced in Cleveland only once in recent
years. I produced it at John Carroll University. Now I
have decided to bring it back with adult actors.
This moving play is simply unforgettable and I believe
you will long remember it. Songs include Putting It
Together, Sunday, Finishing the Hat, Children and Art,
Move On and It's Hot Up Here.
