This electrifying production (that Newsday called a "hip-hop hit!") spins
together the street-smart world of hip-hop with Shakespeare's classic tale
of love and romance "Romeo and Juliet".

Shakespeare's story endures as a tale of ill-fated love. Rome & Jewels is
the classic told through the eyes of a hip-hop poet. Rennie Harris
Puremovement ingeniously twists and molds the Elizabethan verse with the
languages of hip-hop culture to relate a transcend tragedy housed within
present day social controversy. The story unfolds from Rome's perspective
as he evolves from a hardened, self-absorbed gang member into a man who
recognizes and responds to humanity.

Originally intended to be a non-speaking version of the love story, Rennie
Harris was intrigued by the possibility of transcending time, which could be
achieved by blending Shakespeare's words with the body language of hip hop.
The performance focuses on love and how it is expressed through violence,
with gang differences depicted through competing dance styles. The Capulets
or b-boys and b-girls are break dancers, and the Montagues are hip hoppers.

Rennie Harris Puremovement, founded in 1992, is dedicated to preserving and
disseminating hip-hop dance. The Company's work encompasses the diverse and
rich African-American traditions of the past, while simultaneously
presenting the voice of a new generation through its ever-evolving
interpretations of dance. Rennie Harris Puremovement provides a voice for
the ideas, politics and sentiments of youth in a changing society by using
the conventions of concert dance/theater as a vehicle for exploring the
powerful movement of hip-hop culture and its sweeping influence on fashion
and the arts. The company is committed to providing audiences with a
sincere view of the essence and spirit of hip-hop rather than the
commercially exploited stereotypes portrayed by the media.
