About the Play

"R&G", as it is known, tells the story of two characters who are unware of the roles they play Shakespeare’s Hamlet, as they interact with a troupe of traveling players and the Hamlet cast. This was Stoppard’s first full-length play, and it became an international sensation when it first appeeared over 30 years ago. It has remained his most popular work, and is a particular favorite of theater people. Stoppard’s fast-paced, witty dialogue, which has been compared with Oscar Wilde’s, is combined with scenes and snippets of dialogue from the original Hamlet.

According to director Mark Cipra, "This play is a modern classic, so we felt it was time for a different approach. This production is set in modern-day America, with contemporary music, costumes and set." Of the play's content, Cipra says, "We've chosen to emphasize Stoppard's use of Hamlet - a story whose outline and ending are already known - as a metaphor for fate. It looks as though you have choices, from moment to moment, but in fact, it's all been written in advance."

Vincent Stillitano and Michael Roache play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern with Jeffrey Holland appearing as The Player. Stillitano, Roache and Holland are familiar to Northeast Ohio audiences from dozens of professional and amateur productions. Other cast members include Adam Meyer, David Stark (UA mathematics professor), Beth Ann Sadowski, Jeremy Joseph, Sarah Coury, Tony Durbin, Ellen Stark, and Sara Cutlip.
