THE LESSON
By Eugene Ionesco

Ionesco's surrealist masterpiece, The Lesson, written at the end of World
War II, explores the global themes of power, domination, manipulation,
control and destruction, within the context of a single lesson between
teacher and student.

The characters are at the same time larger than life and less than human;
they are, in the words of Ionesco, "strange and improbable but truer than
true, in the profoundly simplified form of caricature, as though to stress
the grotesque and brutal nature of the truth."

The truth revealed in the piece is a global pattern of destruction, using
the power of language as a tool for domination. The dangerous reality of
propaganda is here, in the deliberate manipulation of the meanings of words.
It is, says Ionesco, "a modern method of warfare." That reality is
presented in true surrealist form: combining equal amounts of hilarity and
devastation.

NOT MY FAULT
By Christopher Durang

A serious play about alcoholism, written for school audiences, to trigger
discussions about addiction and denial. Jack denies he is an alcoholic,
while his ex-wife says he is. He gets arrested for stealing, and looks to
his mother, Selina, and sister, Judy, for help. Selina drinks wine all day
and is overly protective of Jack, and never calls him on the ill he's done.
Judy is sick of both her brother and mother.
