The Cleveland Local of the American Federation of Television and Radio
Artists (AFTRA) will hold an informative seminar for anyone interested in
learning more about Union membership.

This is not a recruitment seminar; it is merely to inform any interested
parties as to the nature and benefits of Union membership, and what being in
a performer’s Union, whether AFTRA, SAG or AEA, means to working actors and
broadcasters.

Many non-Union performers have only a basic understanding of what Union
membership means, and there may be some confusion as to the role of the
Union in today’s economy. Therefore, working professionals active in the
three major performers’ Unions will discuss what Union membership is about.

The seminar will cover:

The Purpose of a Union
·	A brief historical perspective of the need for Unions and the origins of
Unions.

History of AFTRA and SAG
·	Highlights of the beginnings of SAG and AFRA (before television) and how
they evolved over the years.

Differences Between the Unions
·	Explain the jurisdiction of each of the major performer’s Unions, SAG,
AFTRA and AEA and why the divisions exist.
·	Explain the different types of contracts that exist and the performances
they cover.
·	Tell what Union contracts do not cover.

Benefits of Belonging to a Union
·	The reasons for belonging to a Union will be discussed, including:
o	Minimum payscale
o	Health Insurance
o	Pensions
o	Collective Bargaining
o	Safe Environments
o	Payment for Rehearsals, Overtime, etc.

How Does a Performer Join a Union?
·	Rules and requirements for admission to the three Unions

Questions From the Audience
·	We will allow sufficient time to address as many questions as possible
from the audience.

The seminar will be held on Tuesday, June 11th, 2002 at Cabaret Dada at 7:00
pm. The list of speakers will include:

Fred Gloor; AFTRA, SAG, AEA
Greg Violand; AFTRA, SAG, AEA
Rick Williams; AFTRA, SAG
Catherine Albers, AFTRA, SAG, AEA
Mike Kraft; AFTRA, SAG
John Buck; AFTRA, SAG, AEA
Joseph Parnell; AFTRA, SAG
Sue Johnson, AFTRA
Cathy Nowlin, Executive Director, AFTRA Cleveland

Thank You,
