About The Play: Set on a small college campus in New England, "Spinning
Into Butter" explores the dangers of both racism and political correctness.
The finger pointing begins when a black student starts receiving hate mail,
and the newly-appointed Dean of Students must struggle to diffuse the
whirlwind of emotions on the campus while confronting her own personal
prejudices. "Shocking, honest, and surprisingly funny, this clear-eyed obser-
vation of both racism and political correctness has made 'Spinning Into
Butter'
America's most talked about play. The Chicago Tribune praised Playwright
Rebecca Gilman's ability to amuse, teach, and move her audience with the
awful truth."
This stunningly frank, caustically humorous examination of race relations
that the Tribune called "an extraordinary fresh, eloquent and candid new play
by a writer of surprising gifts" was launched at the Goodman Theatre in
Chicago and at Lincoln Center in NYC.
