THE SONGS ARE THE STAR OF THE MUSICAL
And if Friday night's opening of "Smokey Joe's Cafe" is any predictor of
success, the Beck Center might want to keep a contractor around to nail the
roof back on every night, there is much thats right about Martin Cespedes
direction of the 1995 Tony-nomonated show.First it moves,Second,Cespedes cast
of nine features solid singers who can bring out the stories in the
tunes,Third, the band cooks...

REMARKABLE SMOKEY JOES CAFE AT BECK CENTER
Start with an outstanding score, add a very talented
cast, sprinkle with functional sets, spice with a
great band, and place the mixture in the hands of a
talented director and choreographer. The results?
Beck Center's remarkable SMOKEY JOES CAFE!!!

BECK CENTER ROCKS WITH SMOKEY JOES CAFE"
Director Martin Cespedes has not only a mastery of the shows material, but
also of the cast.he has displayed the nine talented singers and dancers both
as dynamite soloist, and also as seamless team members in various group
pieces...

The production, exquisitely paced by director-choreographer Martin Cespedes,
periodically blazes into the stratosphare like a spectacular fireworks
display...
in a real theater city, this felicitous surprise would be transferred downtown
for an open ended run.it would be a perfect tonic for an overdose of
fluff.....

BABY THAT IS ROCK & ROLL..
Beck Centers dead on the money mounting of the 1995 revue is clearly the
areas best show of the year, even given a couple of stiff competitors -that i
was getting all revved up to lobby the boss for a stop the presses extra to
make the proclamation, some enterprising producer would be smart to grab up
this production intact, make the adjustments needed, and stick it into any
convenient playhouse square venue, where it run at least as long as it took
Elvis to finally vacate the premises.......
