Musical Director for "The Wiz"

Playhouse is pleased to welcome Bernadette Adrienne Blount Salley as Musical=
=20
Director for the upcoming production of The Wiz. Salley was instrumental in=20
preparing for Akron's Gospel Meets Symphony Project for seven years working=20
closely with the late Maestro Alan Balter, Maestro Eric Benjamin and the=20
Akron Symphony Orchestra as well as with the Akron Symphony Gospel Chorus.=20
She has also been a music educator for grades K-12 with Akron Public Schools=
.
Since 1979, Bernadette Salley has been a part of the music ministry team=
=20
at the Arlington Church of God where she serves as accompanist and workshop=20
clinician as well as throughout the United States and beyond. She serves th=
e=20
Church of God on state, national and international levels.
Salley's compositions have been recorded and published by various artists. =20
You will find some of her music in recent editions of the African American=20
Heritage Hymnal published by GIA Press, Chicago. For the past few years, sh=
e=20
has been responsible for preparing Arlington's Chancel Choir to sing with=20
such artists as Peabo Bryson, Michael McDonald, Marilyn McCoo, Oleta Adams=20
and others involved with The Colors of Christmas presented at E.J. Thomas=20
Performing Arts Hall.
A native of Smithfield, Virginia, and proud alumnus of Hampton Institute in=20
Hampton, Virginia, Salley brings a wealth of diverse musical experiences tha=
t=20
have enriched her life. Whether she is teaching, writing accompanying,=20
traveling, singing to the sick and shut-ins, conducting rehearsals or making=
=20
homemade rolls, her love for the Lord is evident. In addition to her=20
Weathervane activities, she is also preparing to service the Lord in=20
Capetown, South Africa, along with YEPAW (Youth Excellence Performing Arts=20
Workshop) Staff this month.
The Wiz is a musical based on the story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L.=20
Frank Baum and the book by William F. Brown. Dorothy's adventures in the Lan=
d=20
of Oz are set to a dazzling mixture of rock, gospel and soul music comprised=
=20
of music and lyrics by Charlie Small. The production is a collaboration
