This funny, prize-winning play has not had a full-scale professional production for at least 15 years. Long considered one of the greatest examples of 20th Century farce, BLACK COMEDY was widely admired by audiences and critics alike when first produced by the British National Theatre in 1965. It uses wit, imagination and broad, physical humor to get its audiences laughing. A cross between a comedy of manners and Benny Hill.

Peter Shaffer wrote masterpieces such as Equus, Amadeus, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, and Lettice and Lovage. In BLACK COMEDY, Peter Shaffer makes use of mistaken identity and pratfalls, as well as the Chinese Theatre device of light-dark reversal. Darkness, caused by a blown fuse, is seen in the theatre as a brilliantly illuminated room in which characters are blindly groping around. The light-dark device never wears thin, because Shaffer shrewdly fills the story with eight wonderfully defined characters. The 1965 premiere featured Albert Finney, Derek Jacobi and Maggie Smith under the direction of John Dexter.
