Danny Morris Equity Contract Award and Non-Equity Stipend Announced
Cleveland, Ohio. The Cleveland Theater Collective announced today that its
second annual Danny Morris Equity Contract Award has been granted to
Charenton Theater for use in Charenton's upcoming production of Six Degrees
of Separation.. The Collective also granted a stipend for a non-equity actor
to Ensemble Theatre for use in its 2002-2003 season.
The Danny Morris Equity Contract, an award of up to $2,500, covers the
cost of a contract for a member of Actors Equity Association, the union for
professional stage actors and stage managers. The award will enable
Charenton to employ an Equity actor or stage manager in its production of
John Guare's Six Degrees of Separation, which will be presented at Kennedy's
Down Under in the Playhouse Square Center, from February 14 - March 8. The
non-equity stipend is a matching grant of up to $400 that enables Ensemble
Theatre to include an experienced non-equity actor in the cast of a of its
choice during its 2002-2003 season. The Ensemble Theatre performs at the
Civic at 3130 Mayfield Road.
The Danny Morris Equity Contract and the Non-Equity Stipend are awards
created by the Cleveland Theater Collective in order to promote the use of
local professional Equity members and experienced non-Equity actors in
productions at mid- to smaller sized Cleveland theaters. Theaters were
invited to apply for the awards in August, and a committee consisting of two
representatives of the Actors Equity Association, two representatives of
non-competing theaters, and a representative of the Cleveland Theater
Collective made the selection.
Charenton Theater Company was established in 1999 to cultivate greater
Cleveland audiences through the inspiring atmosphere of live theater,
utilizing the wealth of Cleveland's theatrical talent. Says Charenton's
founding artistic director James Mango, "Charenton Theater gives local
artists opportunities to develop, maintain, and improve their skills . . .
while remaining in Cleveland." Ensemble Theatre, which is celebrating its
23rd season this year, has been a long-time leader among Cleveland's
mid-sized theaters, at utilizing the talents of the area's professional
theater artists and at affirming the values of tolerance and diversity in its
programming and casting. "Our emphasis," says artistic director Lucia
Colombi, "has always been and will continue to be on contributing to the
livelihood of the people who make theater magic with their artistry and who
enrich our community by residing here."
Funds for the Danny Morris Equity Contract Award were raised at a benefit
sponsored by the Cleveland Theater Collective on May 20, 2002. The Cleveland
Theater Collective was formed in 2000 as a support group to promote the
professional development of Cleveland area theater artists. The Equity
Contract award is named after Cleveland actor Danny Morris, who was an active
member of the Actors Equity Association, the American Federation of
Television and Radio Artists, and the Screen Actors Guild and who died in
September 1998. In addition to launching the award, the Collective has
organized workshops, discussion forums, a newsletter, and a website
(www.ctcollective.org). Funding for the Collective's programs comes from The
Cleveland Foundation and the George Gund Foundation. Great Lakes Theater
Festival serves as the Collective's fiscal agent, and the Cleveland Play
House donates space for workshops and other events.
