‘Rocky Horror’ rowdy, racy
fun-filled show
Sunday, October 27, 2002

By DAN KANE Repository
entertainment writer
CANTON — As I was typing, a
piece of shimmery red confetti
just fell to the keyboard from
my hair. My shoes are full of
the stuff. Hours after “The
Rocky Horror Show” came to a
close, the show’s tawdry
sparkle lingers.

This rowdy, racy and wildly
entertaining production is
unlike anything to ever grace
the Players Guild stage. Far
from it. The rock ‘n’ roll
musical is part horror-movie
spoof, part saucy sex romp and
all cheeky fun — although
definitely not for the easily
offended.

Just after the lead character,
Frank-N-Furter, clad in
five-inch spike heels, fishnet
stockings and black vinyl
lingerie, belted out his
signature number “Sweet
Transvestite” on opening
night, I watched with
amusement as a well-dressed
older couple bolted from the
theater in fear, disgust,
embarassment — who knows?

The show is quite a ride.
Based on a 1975 movie musical
that has developed a ravenous
cult following, “The Rocky
Horror Show” encourages
audience participation. Fans
in the know have all sorts of
clever (and frequently crude)
lines to shout out at the
actors. At other key moments,
props such as squirt guns,
rolls of toilet paper and bags
of confetti come into play..
(These are available for
purchase in the theater
lobby). By show’s end on
opening night, the theater
floor looked like the
aftermath of Mardi Gras.

“Rocky Horror” is loose and
frisky and in-your-face and at
times bluntly sexual. Before
the houselights go down,
androgynous chorus members
mingle through the audience
provocatively asking people,
“Are you a virgin?” Willing
“virgins” — people who have
not seen “Rocky Horror”
before — are led onstage for
pre-show fun.

The show’s plotline, which can
be confusing but is not
terribly important overall,
follows the misadventures of a
wholesome young couple, Brad
and Janet, whose car breaks
down one stormy night. In
search of a telephone, they
wander to a nearby castle that
happens to be the lair of mad
scientist and sexual
provocateur Dr.
Frank-N-Furter.

Frank and his minions — butler
Riff-Raff, maid Columbia and
assorted houseguests — take
great pleasure in toying with
the sensibilities of these
innocent visitors. Frank
proudly unveils the muscleboy,
Rocky, he has created in his
laboratory a la Frankenstein.
He then proceeds to seduce
both Brad and Janet, who by
show's end are cavorting in
fishnets and bustiers with the
rest as an evil alien plot is
revealed. Got all that?

The story is merely a
framework for loads of campy
clowning and a series of
high-energy musical numbers,
including the vigorous dance
extravaganza “Time Warp” and
Janet’s song of sexual
awakening, “Toucha Toucha
Touch Me.” There is a hot
on-stage rock band, led by
Steve Parsons, and the lead
actors wear headset
microphones.

Zac Hudak clearly was born to
play Frank-N-Furter.
Resembling a hybrid of Jack on
“Will and Grace” and Liza
Minnelli in “Cabaret,” Hudak
struts the stage in his
towering heels, exuding utter
confidence and never missing
an opportunity for a risque
aside or knowing wink to the
audience. Refreshingly, he
doesn't copy Tim Curry’s famed
performance in the “Rocky
Horror” movie, but instead
gives the role his own twists.

Joseph Wolford and Alisa
Ledyard are perfectly cast as
Brad and Janet, the
all-American lovebirds whose
repressed urges are given full
rein at Frank-N-Furter's
place. Talented at singing and
comedy, this attractive pair
leaps fearlessly through the
show's hoops of sexual
hijinks. Steven Sterling is
deadpan funny as Riff-Raff,
Mark Christine exudes equal
parts innocence and lust as
Rocky, and Jennica McCleary
sings and dances with sexy
swagger as Magenta. The show's
suave narrator, John Popa,
warms up the crowd with
profane humor.

With rolls of toilet paper
soaring overheard, squirt-gun
raindrops falling and raucous
heckling from the sidelines,
the Players Guild’s 400-seat
auditorium never felt more
intimate or alive. Amy Marie
Sima directed this bold
endeavor, which should not be
missed by “Rocky” fans or
jaded hipsters who complain
that there’s nothing to do in
Canton.

Performances continue at 8
p.m. today, Tuesday and
Wednesday, and 7 and 11 p.m.
Thursday.

Tickets, $15, may be ordered
at (330) 453-7617.
