LORD OF THE FLIES HAS WINGS AND IT SOARS.

The Cleveland theatre boasts of its riches quite often, and more often
than not, the words are stronger than some its productions. This year
the Beck Center productions speak much louder than any words on a page.
One must only visit that theatre and see the real true effort of
theatrical sweat, blood, talent and a labor love with its current
production of Lord of the Flies. Based upon the allegorical and heavily
studied William Golding novel, this production of Lord of the Flies is
rich in symbolism and parables and is essentially an excellent
production of a brilliant novel. While the play maintains the essence
of the author's original message, the Sunday's performance transported
us into a stark visual experience, complete with a discomfort factor I
haven't experienced in the theatre in quite a long time.

A plane entirely filled with fleeting English school-boys from an
unnamed nuclear war (presented as beautiful tableau sequence in what
could be called a prologue), crash-lands on an uninhabited desert
island. Congregating amongst the wreckage, the boys splinter off into
two separate factions, lead by contrasting leaders. Jack is a spoiled,
headstrong bullying wannabe leader, who assumes command of a group of
choirboys. The others are lead by Ralph, a natural leader and son of a
naval officer who, with the help of bumbling sidekick Piggy, attempts to
bring law and structure to the chaotic carefree lives of the marooned
students. Eventually, the choirboys under Jack resort to brutal
savagery, and it isn't long before the island has regressed to a tribal
and murderous war-zone of differing political ideologies.

Masterful director Brian Zoldessy managed to do with a group of amateur
but wonderful actors what the dreadful film remake couldn't, and that
was to show the convincing degeneration of schoolboys into savage
madmen. The boys all perform wonderfully, and despite the lack of
polish that trained actors can deliver this approach ensures proceedings
are all the more realistic in its dramatic tone. The casts' energy,
youth and vigor excellently portrays the clashing personalities and
ideologies of the boys, without resorting to over dramatic theatrical
moments. The director delivers such a beautiful allegory that it
manages to be rich in visual quality and heavy in symbolism, but yet it
still effectively works as a character drama. In essence, Zoldessy
manages to accurately portray Golding's novel while simultaneously
leaving his thumbprint on the play, and this is a trait of a truly
talented director.

Kudos to the producer, designers, director and cast in mounting a daring
and risky production!

If you loved the book and desire it visualized, then Lord of the Flies
at the Beck Center is an absolute must-see.=20
