CLEVELAND PUBLIC THEATRE PRESENTS

MS. VIVIAN LAROUCHE in

Empire Burlesque

November 29 – December 1, 2002

Cleveland Public Theatre is proud to present the Cleveland premiere of
Empire Burlesque, a vaudeville-esque solo cabaret performed by the lively
and luscious Ms. Vivian LaRouche. Written and directed by Jamie Smith, this
one-act of not-so-civil disobedience delivers up stinging political satire
at its finest-- all by a lovely, if totally pissed-off, soubrette. Empire
Burlesque opens Friday, November 29, 2002 at Cleveland Public Theatre, 6415
Detroit Avenue at W. 65th and closes Sunday, December 1, 2002. Show times
are 8:00pm Friday and Saturday with a Sunday matinee at 3:00pm. Tickets are
$15.00 and $12.00 for seniors and students. For more box office information,
please call Cleveland Public Theatre at 216.631.2727.

In keeping with Cleveland Public Theatre’s history of political satire,
Empire Burlesque is a fun-loving, hard-hitting, vaudeville-meets-populist-
satire of capitalism’s excesses in the United States. Empire Burlesque’s
mischievous vignettes commence with a hootchie-cootchie deconstruction of
Americana, stripping, and patriotism via Gypsy Rose Lee and Public Enemy.
Subsequent acts of naughtiness include an indictment of “The War on Terror”
(No Wham Bam for Afghanistan Sam) and the brand-spanking-new “Iraq and a
Hard-On”. Empire Burlesque leaves virtually no stone unturned, dousing our
2000 presidential (s)election in folk-wisdom (Talkin’ George Bush Blues);
exposing the WTO and its determined undermining of democracy (Don’t Fence Us
In); and indicting the predatory business practices on both sides of the
border (Know Your Target) that lead us to “This Land is Wal-Mart’s”. Empire
Burlesque also features thoughtful, provocative poetic pieces such as
“Patriotic Song”, which ground the play and paint a portrait of patriotism
with the United States as its canvas. A high-energy infomercial for
environmentally motivated counter-aggression leads into a hurly-burly appeal
for political reform in a sidesplitting striptease send-up, “Marxists Are A
Girl’s Best Friend”. That said, “ARE YOU ALL READY FOR A LITTLE LEFT WING
PROPAGANDA?!”

“Empire Burlesque gets the armchair activists off their seats, and delivers
hard-charging, fast-swinging cabaret which gives new vigor to radicalism,
pushing the boundaries of civil disobedience through a series of mischievous
vignettes and stories which seek to locate the pulse of the nation and
translate it to the stage” states playwright Jamie Smith. It is estimated
that nearly 200,000 people marched on Washington D.C. recently to protest
war on Iraq and the policies of the current presidential administration;
Empire Burlesque shares the impulses of this movement and still shows folks
a rollicking good time dissecting the current state of the union.
