<DIV><FONT size=5><U>About The Play</U></FONT></DIV>
<DIV>The Laramie Project, a stunning piece of journalistic theatre, is a kaleidescope of personal reflections on the brutal 1998 kidnapping, beating and murder of 21-year old Matthew Shepard.  Over the course of a year and a half, members of Tectonic Theatre Project travelled to Laramie, Wyoming and conducted interviews with people in the town.  You will hear, in thier own words, how we all cope when tragedy strikes too close to home.  </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Director JT Buck, who in 2000 brought Akron its first look at Terrence McNally's controversial play <EM><FONT color=#660000><U>Corpus Christi </U></FONT></EM>at the University of Akron, began preparation for the production last spring by assembling a travelling reading of The Laramie Project with a cast of 17 local actors.  Now, fully staged in the intimate, 40 seat McManaway Studio theatre at NCP, the play features a cast of 8 actors playing the 60-plus residents of Laramie whose stories are told onstage.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Our production, an Akron/Canton area premire, focuses on the best theatre has to offer, telling its tale in an intimate setting, with a bare minnimum of props, costumes and lighting, and taking a unique approach to the staging, bringing the audience in eye-to-eye contact with these people and thier deeply moving words. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=5><STRONG>A Message from the Director.....................</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV>I was a 20 year old, gay waiter in Akron, OH, in October of 1998,  when a 21 year old gay college student from Laramie, WY was murdered in an act of thoughtless, careless hatred.  I remeber the spot I wias standing in when the news hit.  I rememeber the sweaty palms, the tingling spine, and most of all the heavy, angry heart.  </DIV>
<DIV>Matt's death shook me from my complacency, brought me back to theatre after nearly giving it up completely.  Matt's death got people talking.  Matt's death made it necessary for the rest of us to come out, and tell our stories.</DIV>
<DIV>In the years since, we have all come to know the pain and fear that comes from being the innocent victim of senseless violence.  In times like these, we are lucky in our freedom to gather and tell our stories, to bridge the gaps of understanding that continue to divide us.  The Laramie Project is the story of a community coping in a very intimate way with senseless loss and hate.  It isn't Matthew Sheperd's story.  It's ours.  </DIV>
<DIV>Auditions for our production were held on the 4th anniversary of Matt's death, and since then, I've had the good fortune to work with a group of actors whose talent and passion are a reflection of a generation's need to communicate on a deeper level.  We are now ready to share this story with the people of Northeast Ohio.  Please join them beginning January 16 in North Canton.  Bring your friends.  Better yet, bring your enemies.    </DIV>
