Dear Neohiopal list ( friends & colleagues):
Cesear's Forum is pleased to announce it will be presenting Hugh Whitemore's
play, STEVIE, at Kennedy's Down Under, Playhouse Square Center, Cleveland,
Ohio. A mixture of biography, autobiography and narration, the play follows
the life and career of Britain's poetess Stevie Smith. Noted for her ironic
wit, unexpected turns of phrase, and unsentimental view of the human
condition, Stevie Smith wrote poetry that was as unconventional as her own
character. The mischievous humor, eccentricity and poems, often with an
acerbic twist on familiar nursery rhymes, are chronicled and commented on in
this charming portrait of individuality.
Playwright, Hugh Whitemore has prodigious writing credits and numerous awards
in television, film and theatre. Most recently, he received an Emmy for his
screenplay of the HBO film THE GATHERING STORM. He received a previous
(1983) Emmy for Best Miniseries (PBS) CONCEALED ENEMIES. He dramatized the
Bob Woodward/Carl Bernstein book, THE FINAL DAYS and wrote the miniseries
ELIZABETH R. Other British television credits, where he began his career,
include CIDER WITH ROSIE, DUMMY and A DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME. Film
credits include THE RETURN OF THE SOLDIER, UTZ and Franco Zeffirelli's JANE
EYRE. Many of his stage plays have been adapted for television/film and have
been translated and produced internationally. They include: PACK OF LIES,
BREAKING THE CODE, THE BEST OF FRIENDS, IT'S RALPH, A LETTER OF RESIGNATION,
DISPOSING OF THE BODY and GOD ONLY KNOWS.
STEVIE was first produced in London and then New York in the mid-seventies,
featuring Glenda Jackson. Cesear's Forum offers its 2003 production in a
limited five-week engagement, featuring veteran Cleveland actors Sheila E.
Maloney (in the principle role of Stevie), Lee Mackey and John Kolibab.
Cesear's Forum is dedicated to presenting unconventional, new or lesser-known
plays to Northeast Ohio at affordable prices. The company performs at
Kennedy's Down Under (literally under the Ohio Theatre), an intimate venue
with close proximity to the stage action (no seat is more than 35 feet from
the stage) at the Playhouse Square Center.
STEVIE: January 10th through February 8th, Kennedy's Down Under, Playhouse
Square, 1501 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Friday & Saturdays at 8pm. Single
tickets at $15.00. Call Tickets.com at (216) 241-6000 or (330) 405-3045 for
additional information.

Actors' Summit Theater presents the world premiere of
THE FIGHT AGAINST SLAVERY,
John Brown & Frederick Douglass
January 9 - 19, 2003
THE FIGHT AGAINST SLAVERY, John Brown & Frederick Douglass, a documentary
drama about the twelve year relationship between two of the most significant
figures in 19th Century American history, opens with a preview performance on
Thursday, January 9 and continues through January 19, with performances at 8
PM Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 3:30 PM Sundays. The play, written by
Actors' Summit artistic director Neil Thackaberry, features Mark Gates as
Frederick Douglass and Thackaberry as John Brown. Performances take place at
Actors' Summit Theater in downtown Hudson.
The Play
How does a farmer from Hudson, Ohio start a civil war? How does a man born
into slavery educate himself and rise to become an international diplomat? A
glimpse of the answer may be found in this play which is based on the
writings of the two men. From 1847 until John Brown's death by hanging in
1859, these two men met frequently, became close friends, and influenced each
other's thoughts and actions.
When they first met Frederick Douglass was a pacifist and a leader of the
abolitionist movement. John Brown was a wool merchant living in Springfield,
Massachusetts. Their final meeting took place in an abandoned quarry six
weeks before the raid on Harpers Ferry. The two men were so closely
associated that when news of the Harpers Ferry attack broke, Frederick
Douglass fled the country.
The Cast
Mark Gates (Frederick Douglass) Mark's most recent role was that of Father
Mark Erickson in the longest running play in Cleveland history -- Tony and
Tina's Wedding. He has been an actor for over 35 years. He is a graduate of
the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, West, where he also taught and
directed for seven years. He continues to serve AADA as the regional
auditioner. He currently teaches acting at the Cleveland Play House. In 1986
he received an NAACP award for his work in No Place to be Somebody directed
by Bill Duke. He also received an L.A. Drama Desk Circle award for directing
a revival of Amen Corner. Stage credits include: A Soldier's Play, The Boys
Next Door, A Raisin in the Sun, You Can't Take It With You, Richard III, and
Othello. Film and TV roles include Telling Lies in America, L.A. Story, Edge
of Seventeen, and The Fire this Time.
A. Neil Thackaberry (Author, Director, John Brown) Neil is the Artistic
Director and Founder of Actors' Summit theater. He has served as General
Manager of Cleveland Signstage Theatre and Executive Director of
Weathervane Community Playhouse. Academic credentials include an MBA from
Kent State University, and an MA from the University of New Orleans. He
completed his doctoral work at Wayne State University as a member of the

Drama on an NEH Grant. A professional actor and director, he is a member of

if new resume or contact information is available. Auditions will =
be for
a current episode already in production. Performers' information =
will be
kept on file for future episodes if not cast in this current =
episode.
Video Verite' Productions is not a guild signatory. However, =
authorized
deal memos for after market gross profit entitlement will be issued with =
each
signed actor's agreement and completed role.
I will be requesting those who have auditioned for me =
before to
notify the audition coordinator upon signing in. These performers =
will be
called for a five minute group consultation at the top of each hour to =
cull
them out of the line, and thereby making it shorter for everybody, as I =
will
not have to interview them each individually. So if you've =
auditioned for
me before, you will be guaranteed to not have to wait more than 55 =
minutes to
meet with me (you could go and come back!), and those fresh faces will =
be
bumped forward in the line and be waiting behind fewer people. =
Keep in
mind, you may have done extra work for me, but not have auditioned for
me. They aren't the same thing! If you haven't =
auditioned
for me, please come by and show me what you've got (figuratively). =
If you
have auditioned for me, please wait in the designated list. =
Past
auditionees who get in line with new talent will immediately be sent =
back down to
wait in the designated past audition list. This is only fair. =
Hope to see you there!

Actors' Summit Theater presents the world premiere of
THE FIGHT AGAINST SLAVERY,
John Brown & Frederick Douglass
January 9 - 19, 2003
THE FIGHT AGAINST SLAVERY, John Brown & Frederick Douglass, a documentary drama about the twelve year relationship between two of the most significant figures in 19th Century American history, opens with a preview performance on Thursday, January 9 and continues through January 19, with performances at 8 PM Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 3:30 PM Sundays. The play, written by Actors' Summit artistic director Neil Thackaberry, features Mark Gates as Frederick Douglass and Thackaberry as John Brown. Performances take place at Actors' Summit Theater in downtown Hudson.
The Play
How does a farmer from Hudson, Ohio start a civil war? How does a man born into slavery educate himself and rise to become an international diplomat? A glimpse of the answer may be found in this play which is based on the writings of the two men. From 1847 until John Brown's death by hanging in 1859, these two men met frequently, became close friends, and influenced each other's thoughts and actions.
When they first met Frederick Douglass was a pacifist and a leader of the abolitionist movement. John Brown was a wool merchant living in Springfield, Massachusetts. Their final meeting took place in an abandoned quarry six weeks before the raid on Harpers Ferry. The two men were so closely associated that when news of the Harpers Ferry attack broke, Frederick Douglass fled the country.
The Cast
Mark Gates (Frederick Douglass) Mark's most recent role was that of Father Mark Erickson in the longest running play in Cleveland history -- Tony and Tina's Wedding. He has been an actor for over 35 years. He is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, West, where he also taught and directed for seven years. He continues to serve AADA as the regional auditioner. He currently teaches acting at the Cleveland Play House. In 1986 he received an NAACP award for his work in No Place to be Somebody directed by Bill Duke. He also received an L.A. Drama Desk Circle award for directing a revival of Amen Corner. Stage credits include: A Soldier's Play, The Boys Next Door, A Raisin in the Sun, You Can't Take It With You, Richard III, and Othello. Film and TV roles include Telling Lies in America, L.A. Story, Edge of Seventeen, and The Fire this Time.
A. Neil Thackaberry (Author, Director, John Brown) Neil is the Artistic Director and Founder of Actors' Summit theater. He has served as General Manager of Cleveland Signstage Theatre and Executive Director of Weathervane Community Playhouse. Academic credentials include an MBA from Kent State University, and an MA from the University of New Orleans. He completed his doctoral work at Wayne State University as a member of the Hilberry Theatre Company, and did post graduate work at the Yale School of Drama on an NEH Grant. A professional actor and director, he is a member of Actors' Equity Association and AFTRA. Locally he has appeared at Ensemble Theatre in Kentucky Cycle, the Cleveland Play House in The Importance of Being Earnest, and at Great Lakes Theatre Festival in Richard III.
Additional Events

conducting
auditions for our ongoing made-for-television project =
Seeing. A
two hour episode of Seeing entitled Homecoming was edited =
as a
feature and became an official program entry in the Ohio Independent =

Performers of all genders age 18 and up are welcome to =
audition
Sunday, January 19th from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at 4913 Storer Ave. =
Cleveland.
Performers who have auditioned for me before are welcome to attend, =
especially
if new resume or contact information is available.
Keep in

As the result of generous grants from the Akron Community Foundation and the GAR Foundation, a series of additional events, free and open to the public, have been scheduled to provide additional perspective on these important individuals.
On Sunday, January 12, at 2:00 PM, John T. Hubbell, Ph.D. will present a lecture: "John Brown, Terrorist or Freedom Fighter." Dr. Hubbell is a Professor Emeritus of History at Kent State University, and for many years was editor of Civil War History.
On Saturday, January 18, at 2:00 PM, Michelle Sweeting will present "The Music of John Brown & Frederick Douglass," a performance of hymns & spirituals with commentary by Louis DeCaro, Ph.D.. Michelle Sweeting is a singer and teacher with a particular interest in 19th century sacred music.
On Sunday, January 19, at 2:00 PM, Louis DeCaro, Ph.D. Will present a lecture: "The Religion of John Brown." Louis A. DeCaro, Jr. is a religious educator and pastor who lives in New Jersey. He is the author of On the Side of My People: A Religious Life of Malcolm X. He has recently published Fire from the Midst of You, A Religious Life of John Brown.
THE FIGHT AGAINST SLAVERY, John Brown & Frederick Douglass, will also be touring to public and parochial schools from January 20th through February 28.

As the result of generous grants from the Akron Community Foundation and the GAR Foundation, a series of additional events, free and open to the public, have been scheduled to provide additional perspective on these important individuals.

Keep in

As the result of generous grants from the Akron Community Foundation and the GAR Foundation, a series of additional events, free and open to the public, have been scheduled to provide additional perspective on these important individuals.
