Ohio Dance Theater Presents JOURNEY

at The Cleveland Play House January 9 - 11, 2003

Original Work Celebrates Triumph of African American Spirit
Cleveland Playhouse Becomes Company's Performance Home

Cleveland, Ohio -- Ohio Dance Theater, an Oberlin-based dance company
currently in its 10th year, marks the inception of its relationship
with The Cleveland Play House in January with three performances of
JOURNEY, an original work of musical theater chronicling the
historical, emotional and spiritual evolution of African Americans
from slave days to the present. Performances are January 9 and 10 at
7:30 PM and January 11at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM. (Tickets are available
from The Cleveland Play House Box Office or by calling 216-795-7000.)
ODT's first production in Cleveland, JOURNEY will be followed in the
summer, 2003 by Cleveland Play House performances beginning with
Cinderella. "We're thrilled,"

says Denise Gula, ODT's Artistic Director and the creator of
JOURNEY, "to bring this show to Cleveland audiences. Coming to
Cleveland has been a journey in its own right. The show has been in
development for four years and it has been loved and embraced by
audiences throughout Ohio, San Francisco and the East Coast. As The
Play House becomes our new performance home, I do feel in some sense
as if we've 'arrived.' We've been around for ten years, but 2003 is
a new beginning for us. Ohio audiences will see us in a new light
--and they'll simply get to see us -- as The Play House is obviously
such a wonderful venue, a destination and a Mecca for the performing
arts."

A fast-paced show "worthy of being done on a national basis"
(Chronicle-Telegram), JOURNEY incorporates beloved gospel and jazz
songs, poetry, dramatic scenes, dance and drumming as it tells a
moving, sometimes harrowing, and ultimately triumphant tale. Opening
in the 1800s, the first section, "The Underground Railroad," focuses
on the flight on a fictional slave, Molly, as she and her husband
travel North to freedom. "Follow the Drinking Gourd," sings a
performer, using slave-code for The Big Dipper, the astronomic
constellation that leads to the northern territories and,
symbolically, freedom and a better life. "For the old man is waiting
for to carry you to freedom/If you follow the Drinking Gourd." North
-- Harlem, to be exact -- is where the audience lands in the show's
next section, which showcases the artistic and cultural explosion
that occurred in that section of New York City in the 1920's. Through
the words of its poet laureate, Langston Hughes, through a sultry
"Torch Song" and a jivey and rousing rendition of the standard
"T'ain't Nobody's Business," The Harlem Renaissance bursts alive
onstage in all its smoke-filled, sleepless glory. The mood turns
serious once again for the show's third segment, "The Civil Rights
Era," a moving amalgam of those years as seen through the eyes of
Myrlie Evers, the wife of slain civil rights activist Medgar Evers.
Here again, the originality of JOURNEY shines through; these
seemingly familiar, haunting events receive new meaning and fresh
perspective through the rawness and immediacy of dance. The
production ends with an excerpt from Nelson Mandella's inauguration
speech and a sentiment that sums up the ethos of the piece: "We ask
ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing
small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightening about
shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We
were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is
not just in some of us, it is in everyone."

JOURNEY assembles onstage a talented ensemble of performers from
around the country. Reprising their roles are Dahlia Berfroid and
Kyle Primous. Berfroid, who lives in New York City, was formerly with
Dance Theatre of Harlem and was a principle dancer in ODT's
production of The Nutcracker. Primous is well known to Cleveland
audiences as an actor, dancer and vocalist and fronts for the
Cleveland band Special Blend. The cast also includes Allen Shissler,
who's numerous credits include Hartford Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet and
Alabama Ballet. Shissler recently relocated from Milwaukee to join
ODT as the company's principal male dancer. Also new to the show is
April Brown, a talented Chicago-based actress, singer and dancer.

Having already captivated audiences throughout Ohio and beyond with
its spellbinding theatricality and its message of hope and unity,
JOURNEY is a must-see work and the beginning of a new era for Ohio
Dance Theater as it celebrates its new performance home at The
Cleveland Play House.
