Cleveland Public Theatre's
DanceWorks 03 continues with
resident dance company
SAFMOD
in
CultureFlex 2003

A repertoire dance theatre concert of eclectic multimedia collaborations

If you've never seen SAFMOD performance ensemble, do yourself a favor and
check them out this weekend.

Truly, one of the most original artistic gifts Cleveland has to offer,
SAFMOD continually re-defines the concept of collaboration.

Cleveland Public Theatre's six-week series of Dance begins with CPT Resident
Dance Company, SAFMOD in an evening length work entitled CultureFlex which
opens at 8:00pm on Friday, January 24 and runs through Sunday February 2,
2003. All Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8:00pm with Sunday
matinees at 3:00pm. Tickets are $18.00 regular and $15.00 for seniors and
students on Fridays and Saturdays while Sunday performances are $15.00
regular and $12.00 for seniors and students. For reservations or information
about the DanceWorks Series please call 216.631.2727.

SAFMOD Performance Ensemble celebrates ten years of art-making in Cleveland
with their repertoire concert featuring five separate new works of
collaborative dance theatre. Artistic Director/Choreographer Young Park and
Music Director/Composer Neil Chastain have formed a collaboration between
core company dancers and other Cleveland-based arts professionals to create
five new cross-disciplinary pieces:

South Indian Bharathanatyam dancer Sujatha Srinivasan and Young Park create
an original dance piece combining Bharathanatyam and modern dance.

Metal sculptor John Ranally has constructed a Percussion Contraption - an
audio-activated sculpture that dancers rhythmically climb and dance
throughout. B-Boy crew, The Humble Ones (formerly the GroundF/X B-Boy
Squad) add their well loved break-dancing flavor to this energetic piece.

Young Park choreographs a dance in the Butoh tradition, collaborating with
visual artists Alison Egan and Mark Sugiuchi to create an
environmentally-themed piece as “an ode to forgotten childhood imagination,
evoking the lost souls of fallen Redwoods, whispering in our ears as lonely
ghosts who cannot reincarnate.”

And finally, SAFMOD presents a piece highlighting the collaborative effort
found at the very essence of what SAFMOD stands for: Fibonacci. Composer
Chastain has created original music influenced by Eastern rhythmic cycles
and based upon the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical formula frequently
found in nature. Park sets her choreography on the composition-driven piece.

CPT developed the DanceWorks Series five years ago in an effort to provide
Cleveland audiences the opportunity to witness the power and beauty of
regional dance companies. In October of 2000, Northern Ohio Live Magazine
awarded Cleveland Public Theatre the 2000 Award of Achievement in the Field
of Dance.
