Lakewood, Ohio - The Beck Center for the Arts brings William
Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream to Lakewood.
This year, make Valentine's Day more than just chocolate,
roses and romantic dinners. Why not add a little Shakespeare to your
evening? Opening February 14 at The Beck Center for the Arts, A
Midsummer Night's Dream is sure to add a little romance, magic and
mischief to your evening. The Beck Center's talented cast will bring
Shakespeare's story of confused lovers and meddlesome fairies to life,
under the direction of Jerrold Scott. =20
Since it was originally written in the late 1500's, A Midsummer Night's
Dream has undergone many transformations; it has been made into a
musical, a ballet and several films. The most recent film, starring
Kevin Kline and Michelle Pfeiffer moved this story of couples in love to
Tuscany in the late 1800's. Beck Center's production will take place in
ancient Greece. "I chose to place the characters in ancient Greece
because it was a time when magic seemed possible," Scott said. "Also,
many of the characters and references in the play are taken from this
time period."
A Midsummer Night's Dream, written by William Shakespeare, is the most
frequently performed of his comedies. "When I was at the Royal Academy
of Dramatic Arts we discussed the popularity of this play and the fact
that at any given time it is being performed somewhere on the planet,"
Scott said. "I think it is so popular because it is the most lyrical of
Shakespeare's plays and also the hilarity of the situations that happen
in the magical forest."
The Beck Center production features a cast of more than 20 actors
including Fabio Polanco and Tracee Patterson who play Oberon and
Titania, the King and Queen of the Fairies. Jerrold Scott, an assistant
professor at Case Western Reserve University, has been involved in
previous productions of this play as an actor, assistant director and
text coach. It is only natural for him to assume the role of director
for this production.=20
"The story in A Midsummer's Night Dream is about magic, and the beauty
of the language," Scott said. "What makes this play so appealing is
that it is a story that shows the triumph of love over obstacles,
adversity and interference."=20
A Midsummer Night's Dream runs February 14 through March 9.
