Push the envelope with ‘Women
Behind Bars’ at Players Guild

sexual content, the play is

As campy as it is crude,
“Women Behind Bars” pulls no
punches, but it throws a few.
An adults-only comedy opening
tonight in the Players Guild
Arena Theatre, “Women Behind
Bars” is a hard-boiled parody
of such 1950s B movies as
“Caged” and “Reform School
Girls.”
The setting is the Women’s
House of Detention in
Greenwich Village, circa 1952.
The prisoners are a colorful
and combative lot. The
Southern belle named Blanche
is doing time for “sodomy and
shoplifting.” Silver-haired
Granny was imprisoned for
manslaughter — “nine times!”
Cherry was sent up the river
for “peddling without a
bicycle.”
At a peak moment, the toughest
of these broads, Gloria,
brandishes a switchblade and
intones, “There are no pardons
in the House of the Damned!”
“People who are easily
offended should stay away,”
director Carla Derr says with
a chuckle. “We have edited
nothing. All the language and
sexual innuendo have stayed
put.”
“It’s an incredibly irreverent
farce,” says Margene Rannigan,
who plays Gloria. “And it’s an
equal-opportunity offender. We
’ve got something in there to
(tick) everybody off.”
The play is typical fare for
director Derr. It has a female
focus, a low budget and it
provokes.
It also features actresses
Jodi Wilson and Pat Burns
Paulus, who have been
mainstays in Derr’s
productions for two decades.
“I’ve never had a show like
this, where I can’t wait to
get here every night,” she
says of her rowdy gang of
“Women Behind Bars” inmates.
“These women are so dedicated.
They take every pratfall even
at rehearsal.”
“Women Behind Bars” is a far
cry from the first play Derr
directed, a fluffy comedy
titled “Take Her, She’s Mine,”
at Jackson High School her
senior year.
“We weren’t allowed to use the
word ‘virgin’ onstage,” she
remembers with amusement.
For about 20 years, Derr has
made it her business to get
risky and often new material
onstage in Stark County.
At the North Canton Playhouse
in the early ’80s, she
directed offbeat, off-Broadway
fare like “Come Back to the 5
and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy
Dean” and “A Coupla White
Chicks Sitting Around
 Talking.” She directed shows
in the Players Guild Arena.
Frustrated by what she viewed
as the conservatism of
community theater, Derr
decided to open a place her
own. From 1985-90, she owned
and operated the Contract
Players Theatre, housed in a
converted house on Wales
Avenue NW, just north of
Portage Street, in Jackson
Township.
“It was really a lark,” Derr,
49, recalls fondly. “I had
just enough money in my
savings account to buy that
little house.”
Low on budget and high on
ambition, the Contract Players
presented seasons filled with
innovative, if sometimes
uneven, theater. There were
issue plays about rape and
battered women and Vietnam
vets. There were musicals:
“Leader of the Pack,” “Hair”
and “Rock Carol.” One of the
biggest crowd-pullers was
“Bent,” a drama about gay
prisoners at a Nazi
concentration camp.
The theater quickly gained a
reputation for presenting new
and untested plays. Some
received their world premieres
in the converted theater,
which had been a living room.
“One year, we had over 1,200
scripts sent to us. The
postman would bring at least
10 a day,” Derr remembers.
“Playwrights are desperate to
get their work produced.”
On Dec. 31, 1990, a fire
believed to be arson destroyed
the Contract Players Theatre.
A disheartened Derr then
staged a few shows under the
Contract Players name at
locales in downtown Massillon
and downtown Canton. But she
quickly tired of creating
theater spaces instead of
productions.
Fortunately, Derr has returned
to the Players Guild’s Arena
Theatre. She directed “How I
Learned to Drive” there in
2001, and now “Women Behind
Bars.” She’ll next direct the
Guild musical “Personals,”
opening in May.
“I just love this space,” Derr
says about the intimate Arena.
“Plus, it’s nice not having to
pay all the bills myself.”
Since 1995, Derr also has been
the drama teacher at GlenOak
High School. And she is vice
president of the Players Guild
’s board.
Asked about her approach to
directing plays, Derr says, “I
’m not really a director, I’m
a facilitator. “Everybody
brings in pieces of
themselves.”
“She’s all right,” Wilson
deadpans, when asked about her
longtime friend and frequent
director Derr. Then she
laughs.
“She’s my friend and it’s fun
to do things with your
friends,” Wilson says. “My
God, we must have done 15 or
20 shows together. When you
work with somebody that long,
you can anticipate and help
each other out. You just
understand.”
“Carla will pretty much let
you make your own decisions
and have the freedom to try
stuff,” Rannigan says. “Only
if it’s not working will she
step in and tweak things.”
Interestingly, Derr claims she
has never sat in the theater
and watched one of her shows
after it opened.
“I love the rehearsal process
so much. I could be in
rehearsal forever and never
open and be very happy,” she
says. “Final dress (rehearsal)
is always sad to me because
you know that the show is out
of your hands.”

campy as it is crude, =93Women Behind Bars=94 pulls no punches, but it =
throws a
few. <o:p></o:p>

adults-only comedy opening tonight in the Players Guild Arena Theatre, =
=93Women
Behind Bars=94 is a hard-boiled parody of such 1950s B movies as =
=93Caged=94 and
=93Reform School Girls.=94 <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

The
setting is the Women=92s House of Detention in Greenwich Village, circa =
1952. The
prisoners are a colorful and combative lot. The Southern belle named =
Blanche is
doing time for =93sodomy and shoplifting.=94 Silver-haired Granny was =
imprisoned
for manslaughter =97 =93nine times!=94 Cherry was sent up the river for =
=93peddling
without a bicycle.=94 <o:p></o:p>

<p><font size=3D3 color=3Dblack face=3D"Times New Roman"><span =
style=3D'font-size:12.0pt'>At
a peak moment, the toughest of these broads, Gloria, brandishes a =
switchblade
and intones, =93There are no pardons in the House of the Damned!=94 =
<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

=93People
who are easily offended should stay away,=94 director Carla Derr says =
with a
chuckle. =93We have edited nothing. All the language and sexual innuendo =
have
stayed put.=94 <o:p></o:p>

=93It=92s
an incredibly irreverent farce,=94 says Margene Rannigan, who plays =
Gloria. =93And
it=92s an equal-opportunity offender. We=92ve got something in there to =
(tick)
everybody off.=94 <o:p></o:p>

The
play is typical fare for director Derr. It has a female focus, a low =
budget and
it provokes. <o:p></o:p>

It
also features actresses Jodi Wilson and Pat Burns Paulus, who have been
mainstays in Derr=92s productions for two decades. =
<o:p></o:p>

=93I=92ve
never had a show like this, where I can=92t wait to get here every =
night,=94 she
says of her rowdy gang of =93Women Behind Bars=94 inmates. =93These =
women are so
dedicated. They take every pratfall even at rehearsal.=94 =
<o:p></o:p>

=93Women
Behind Bars=94 is a far cry from the first play Derr directed, a fluffy =
comedy
titled =93Take Her, She=92s Mine,=94 at Jackson High School her senior =
year. <o:p></o:p>

=93We
weren=92t allowed to use the word =91virgin=92 onstage,=94 she remembers =
with
amusement. <o:p></o:p>

For
about 20 years, Derr has made it her business to get risky and often new
material onstage in Stark County. <o:p></o:p>

At
the North Canton Playhouse in the early =9280s, she directed offbeat, =
off-Broadway
fare like =93Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean=94 and =
=93A Coupla
White Chicks Sitting Around Talking.=94 She directed shows in the =
Players Guild
Arena. <o:p></o:p>

Frustrated
by what she viewed as the conservatism of community theater, Derr =
decided to
open a place her own. From 1985-90, she owned and operated the Contract =
Players
Theatre, housed in a converted house on Wales Avenue NW, just north of =
Portage
Street, in Jackson Township. <o:p></o:p>

=93It
was really a lark,=94 Derr, 49, recalls fondly. =93I had just enough =
money in my
savings account to buy that little house.=94 =
<o:p></o:p>

Low
on budget and high on ambition, the Contract Players presented seasons =
filled
with innovative, if sometimes uneven, theater. There were issue plays =
about
rape and battered women and Vietnam vets. There were musicals: =93Leader =
of the
Pack,=94 =93Hair=94 and =93Rock Carol.=94 One of the biggest =
crowd-pullers was =93Bent,=94 a
drama about gay prisoners at a Nazi concentration camp. =
<o:p></o:p>

The
theater quickly gained a reputation for presenting new and untested =
plays. Some
received their world premieres in the converted theater, which had been =
a
living room. <o:p></o:p>

=93One
year, we had over 1,200 scripts sent to us. The postman would bring at =
least 10
a day,=94 Derr remembers. =93Playwrights are desperate to get their work =
produced.=94
<o:p></o:p>

On
Dec. 31, 1990, a fire believed to be arson destroyed the Contract =
Players
Theatre. A disheartened Derr then staged a few shows under the Contract =
Players
name at locales in downtown Massillon and downtown Canton. But she =
quickly
tired of creating theater spaces instead of productions. =
<o:p></o:p>

Fortunately,
Derr has returned to the Players Guild=92s Arena Theatre. She directed =
=93How I
Learned to Drive=94 there in 2001, and now =93Women Behind Bars.=94 =
She=92ll next
direct the Guild musical =93Personals,=94 opening in May. =
<o:p></o:p>

=93I
just love this space,=94 Derr says about the intimate Arena. =93Plus, =
it=92s nice not
having to pay all the bills myself.=94 <o:p></o:p>

Since
1995, Derr also has been the drama teacher at GlenOak High School. And =
she is
vice president of the Players Guild=92s board. =
<o:p></o:p>

Asked
about her approach to directing plays, Derr says, =93I=92m not really a =
director,
I=92m a facilitator. =93Everybody brings in pieces of themselves.=94 =
<o:p></o:p>

=93She=92s
all right,=94 Wilson deadpans, when asked about her longtime friend and =
frequent
director Derr. Then she laughs. <o:p></o:p>

=93She=92s
my friend and it=92s fun to do things with your friends,=94 Wilson says. =
=93My God,
we must have done 15 or 20 shows together. When you work with somebody =
that
long, you can anticipate and help each other out. You just =
understand.=94 <o:p></o:p>

=93Carla
will pretty much let you make your own decisions and have the freedom to =
try
stuff,=94 Rannigan says. =93Only if it=92s not working will she step in =
and tweak
things.=94 <o:p></o:p>

Interestingly,
Derr claims she has never sat in the theater and watched one of her =
shows after
it opened. <o:p></o:p>

=93I
love the rehearsal process so much. I could be in rehearsal forever and =
never
open and be very happy,=94 she says. =93Final dress (rehearsal) is =
always sad to me
because you know that the show is out of your hands.=94 =
