Hello all,
As you may or may not know, a musicians strike is imminent on Broadway. One
of the main stcking points is musician minimums. Producers need to have a
minimum number of musicians in the pit of a broadway show, based on the size
of the house. This insures that live music will continue, and that producers
can not go with a cheaper option of recorded or synthesized music. The
musicians union is willing to reduce minimums but not do away with them
entirely. Many composers have weighed in on the importance of this issue
including, Jason Robert Brown, Andrew Lippa and John Kander along with a
multitude of other well know names in New York theatre. They feel that this
would take the decision of what is most beneficial for the show away from the
composer, arranger and orchestrator, and put it soley into the hands of the
producers.

Almost all shows running this week have had rehearsals with virtual
orchestras, but it seems that they are not going to let the public know that
if a strike does occur, audiences could be paying a great deal of money to
see shows with recorded music. Talks continued late into the night, but the
union has indeed voted to strike if the deadline of March 2nd is passes
without an agreement being reached.

The musicians' union is circulating an online petition that will be sent to
producers, that will show them how many people feel that this issue is
important. I have provided the link. Save Live Broadway Please let
producers know that live music is important to the integrity and success of
the theatre. Thanks!
