BAD EPITAPH THEATER COMPANY ANNOUNCES

"STATE OF SIEGE" BY ALBERT CAMUS

OPENING FRIDAY, MAY 9, 2003, AT CLEVELAND PUBLIC THEATRE

Bad Epitaph Theater Company proudly presents STATE OF SIEGE by Albert Camus
and directed by Thomas Cullinan, opening Friday, May 9, 2003 at 8 PM, at
Cleveland Public Theatre, 6415 Detroit Avenue in Cleveland.

Bad Epitaph's 2003 spring classic will be Albert Camus' STATE OF SIEGE - the
French existentialist's own dramatic re-imagining of the themes in his novel
"The Plague." A comet passes over the City, and taking this as an evil
omen, the people surrender their freedom in exchange for security. Find out
what happens when a culture of liberty is replaced by a cult of fear.

Bad Epitaph Producing Director Thomas Cullinan brings his critically
acclaimed talents as a director to this play, as well as introducing the Bad
Epitaph audience to his skills in mask work and movement to create a
theatrical event of distinction.

Performance Schedule:
FIRST WEEK: Fri., May 9 and Sat., May 10 at 8 PM
SECOND WEEK: Thu., May 15, Fri., May 16 and Sat., May 17 at 8 PM, Sun., May
18 at 2 PM
THIRD WEEK: Thur., May 22, Fri., May 23 and Sat., May 24 at 8 PM, Sun., May
25 at 2 PM
FOURTH WEEK: Thu., May 29, Fri., May 30 and Sat., May 31 at 8 PM

Regular admission for all performances is $15. Student and Senior admission
is $10. Reservations can be made by calling the BETC Box Office at (216)
556-0919 or online at badepitaph.org.

The Acting Company includes Christopher M. Bohan, Allen Branstein, Joshua D
Brown, Christine Castro, Mindy Childress, Mark Cipra, Jazmin Corona, Elaine
Feagler, Jim Green, Nick Koesters, Kristie Lang, Tim Pringpuangkeo, Susan
Speers and Andrew Narten as The Plague.

The Production Company includes Company Manager Brian Pedaci, Production
Manager Nick Koesters, Technical Director Scollard Reinhart, Costume
Designer Alison B. Hernan, Scenic Designer Terry Martin with Set Design by
Thomas Cullinan. The Stage Manager is Gina Verdi.

Bad Epitaph's mission is to produce contemporary drama, and modern
interpretations of the classics in an urban setting. It is also their
mission to assemble and educate a company of professional artists through
practical application of the theater arts, and to present a forum where what
is said is as important as how it is said.

In short, to create a theater company about whom it could be said, "After
your death you were better have a bad epitaph than their ill report while
you live." (Hamlet, II.ii)

Even in my most utopian imaginings, I recognize this, Richard -- thanks for
bringing it up. But there are alternatives: gate-splits, low-cost
rentals, doing readings as a benefit for the theatre companies
themselves. Let's keep the artistic opportunities from shrinking away to
nothing.

CONVERGENCE-CONTINUUM 2003 - SINCERITY FOREVER
After successfully launching convergence-continuum late last year with
Quills and The Unseen Hand at their new theatre in Tremont, The Liminis, the
company went on hiatus for the winter as planned. Now that Cleveland's long
cold winter is over convergence-continuum is up and running again and ready
to present four productions of their environmental style of theatre in a
full spring through fall series. This year convergence-continuum is
extending its runs from four weeks to five weeks for their first three
shows.

First up is Sincerity Forever by Mac Wellman, directed by Clyde Simon, the
company's Artistic Director. The Liminis will once again be transformed -
this time into a back road on the outskirts of Hillsbottom, where the
sincerity of its citizens has become tainted by a visit from mystic
furballs. Can anyone set them straight again? Who? How? Perhaps Pokey the
Cat has the answer. You'll just have to come and find out. Be prepared for a
visit from The Divine . . . .

Sincerity Forever opens Friday, May 9, and will run Thursdays, Fridays and
Saturdays through June 7. All performances begin at 8pm. Admission is
$12 general and $9 for students and seniors. For information and
reservations call 216-687-0074. The Liminis is located at 2438 Scranton
Road in Cleveland's historic Tremont neighborhood. Seating for this
production will be limited to 45.

The remaining productions are scheduled for July/August, October/November,
and a three-week run in December. So stay tuned for further developments as
the year rolls along - flammable fruit, sado-bottomy, and more bald actors -
the kind of unconventional theatre you won't experience anywhere else in
these parts.

Friends of the arts community:

A site has come to my attention that I think all of us can contribute to.
Books for Soldiers is a group which provides donated literature to our men
and women fighting overseas. http://www.booksforsoldiers.com/

All types of literature are appreciated, as many soldiers have requests for
anything. I think this a great opportunity for artists to send their gently
worn scriptbooks and play anthologies. There is also a PayPal option for
those who would rather not part from their much loved copy of "Death of a
Salesman". As a cousin of an officer currently stationed in N. Korea and
the daughter of a disabled American veteran, I hope that all of you will
peruse the site and can hopefully give in some way or form. Whether you
support the effort that the soldiers are there for or not, we must remember
that as artists one of our goals is to nuture the mind and soul, and I think
of no better way to reach them than through this type of charity.

Thank you for your time.

Shalene

Dear Mr Friedman,

I appreciate your comments.

The purpose of my posting was to create a dialogue and
judging from the length of your response I've succeeded.

I certainly wasn't passing judgement on any theatre, but
merely relating my own experience and posing a few questions.
However, if we've reached a point where we shouldn't ask questions,
because of the war or economy, than perhaps theatres are better off dark.

I'm sure your experience with Sunday in the Park with George
was humiliating and I wish your organization success in the future.

Incidentally, it's not Ms. Buss, it's Mr. I'm a boy.

Regards,

Kato Buss

  Dear Ms. Buss,

In reference to your note to members of the Neohiopal and theatre
participants everywhere, concerning the cancellations of their seasons....

As a producer/director who recently (Summer 2002) had to cancel a theatre
production due to the changing economics, I have to wonder if you think
producers and directors like to cancel productions. Have you looked around
you? We are currently at war and the last thing people are thinking about is
going to the theatre. This directly affects their bottom line. Non-profit or
for profit, college theatre or community theatre, we are all in the same
boat.

The decision to cancel a show or a season are not made lightly. Ms. Buss,
the money to put on a show comes from individuals, corporations and
foundations. All are under a great deal of financial stress these days, as
are all theatre organizations. I personally believe it is going to get
worse before it gets better. Given the choice of granting a small theatre
company or a school system $20,000 for 'artistic enrichment' who do you
think the Foundation, corporation or individual is going to make a grant to?

When I cancelled Sunday in the Park with George last year I positively
outraged at least 30 people who had depended upon me for not only salaries
but also artistic succor. It was a decision taken completely out of my
hands. Yet, many blamed me. Indeed, while there were several individuals
that understood the vicissitudes of the marketplace, there were those who
did not. "That's life in the theatre," two of my Equity actors told me.
They understood, and indeed felt worse for me than for themselves. I found
the entire situation a humiliating experience that even now I am not quite
over.

The theatres in Northeast Ohio who have had to cancels shows or parts of
their seasons, I'm sure, are terribly dishearted and distressed at their
decision. I can't believe that Ms. Casey or Ms. Colombi or Mr. Levin are
very happy right now. I believe we owe them, and the other theatre
producers/directors who have provided us with theatrical opportunities over
the years, a great debt gratitude.

Yes, we love to hate their choices of casts and plays and interpretations
but they are there for us 'theatre people.'

We do need to attend the theatre this weekend and next weekend. But we
also need to understand where these producers and directors are coming from.

Kato Buss <livchant at msn.com> wrote:

Theatre artists hit by disturbing outbreak.

How many local directors, designers, technicians, and actors
have been affected by this spring's rash of season cancellations?

Personally, I was precast (last August) in Dobama Theatre's production
of
Raised In Captivity, due to open mid-April, only to find out that Dobama
has
cancelled the remainder of it's season..along with other local theatres.

It has left me quite disappointed and not necessarily due to the loss of
revenue.
As any non-union actor can tell you the flat-fee at local theatres
hardly covers
post-show libation. I'm far more disappointed in the loss of creative
work.

I understand there are many facets to operating a theatre and the
decision to
"close the doors" is not an easy one. However, if I may be so bold as to
pose
a question. Does the artistic staff and board of directors of a theatre,
who select
a season, hire a production staff for each play, and as in my case,
precast actors
months-and-months in advance, rely on the general pubic to fulfill their
season?

Finally, at the risk of sounding political, could there be a worse time
for theatres to go dark?
Has there ever been a time in recent history when our country needed the
voice of theatre?
And to quote a "Frenchman" (in an act of utter diplomatic irony):

"The Theatre must give us everything that is crime, love, war, or
madness,
if it wants to recover it's necessity. It is no wonder the Great
Public looks
to the movies for violent satisfactions, whose intentions do not
deceive them."

oh screw it..SPIDERMAN IV opens this weekend..popcorn anyone?

Dobama Announces Cutbacks to 2002-03 Season
- - -
25th Annual Marilyn Bianchi Kids’ Playwriting Festival to be Celebrated as
Planned

As a result of the current economic climate and in an effort to ensure the
future health and vitality of Dobama Theatre, the Board of Trustees has
voted to cancel the 2003 productions of Nicky Silver’s Raised in Captivity,
Dobama Night Kitchen’s Punk Project and the Owen Kelly Adopt-A-Playwright
Program.

Highlights of the 2002-2003 season included the Midwest premiere of Jason
Sherman’s Three In The Back, Two In The Head, and Charles Busch’s The Tale
of The Allergist’s Wife. “Dobama’s reputation for producing innovative,
professional theatre is unquestioned,” says Board President Spencer Caress.
“Our actions regarding the 2002-2003 season reflect our commitment to the
future success of Dobama, including relocating to our new home.”

Dobama Artistic Director Joyce Casey, who has been with the 43-year-old
theatre for 25 years, says this is the first time she can recall the theatre
ever having to remove a production from the schedule. “During this season,
we successfully premiered the work of two of America’s Pulitzer-Prize
winning playwrights – Tony Kushner, author of Homebody/Kabul, and Suzan-Lori
Parks, who wrote our current production, In the Blood, which is running
through March 30th,” she says. “I am constantly nourished and recharged by
the work of our artists,” says Casey. “Canceling a production is a loss for
all of us as well as for our loyal patrons, whose continuing support we
deeply appreciate.”

Casey adds, “We will be celebrating Cleveland’s youngest playwrights in
June. The award-winning 25th Annual Marilyn Bianchi Kids’ Playwriting
Festival (MBKPF) will be celebrated as planned June 5th-8th, 2003.” MBKPF
is a real gem in Dobama’s production schedule and it is the first children’s
playwriting festival in the United States! Each year, Dobama fully produces
ten to twelve plays written by Cuyahoga County students in grades 1-12, June
5th is a benefit night at $25 per person, and the festival will culminate in
nine free performances June 6th-8th.
