It has been fascinating to see the many different views on the economy & the
arts in our region as of late.
A couple thoughts: We at Geauga Theatre (GLTG) are trying to support
locally written, original works. We have, in fact, extended the deadline
until May 1st for submissions to our search / contest for an original script
from Lake, Geauga & Ashtabula counties that we will produce for stage this
coming fall. (With a stipend to the writer) We feel it is important to
present original (AND LOCAL!) works even on the “community theater” level;
the message it sends to the community will be, we believe, a positive one.
Still, our production of “The Music Man” (Full of wonderful talent, and a
loved “tried & true show”) opens this Friday. We need people to support our
shows, all of them, so we can support the arts community in turn. It is
that simple. I wonder how many are in this boat with us? Doubtless, many.
The bottom line is that times are tough and we do need to support each
other, as well as attract an audience. We at the GLTG have tried to be
supportive of other theaters (yes…we buy a ticket and encourage others to do
so)…In fact, I have sent out personal e-mails encouraging some of our
“regulars” to try a different theater….support a show that might deserve a
better audience. We “donate” tickets to schools, nursing homes,
churches…all the “right” things. Yet, it still gets down to this: People
have to actually come out and buy a ticket.
I wish all the theaters, all the actors and crews, theater staff, a
prosperous year. I hope we all do support our local artists, writers, and
talent. Always. I also hope that people support even the classic shows at
little theaters; you may be in reality supporting something as important as
a local playwright, talent that needs encouraged in our area, or an
affordable class for a child. The money starts somewhere, and not always
through foundations & grants.
All the best to all the theaters; it wouldn’t be this region without you; I
will continue to wish you the best, whatever programming you decide upon.
