Shaker Theatre Acting Ensembles in Theatre Concert
Present "Take This Waltz"

The Theatre Arts Department of Shaker Heights High School celebrates its
24th anniversary of Ensemble Movement Theatre with the Spring Ensemble Show
on May 1, 2, and 3 at 8 PM, in the Large Auditorium at Shaker Heights High
School, 15911 Aldersyde Drive. The program is presented as part of a full
season of theatrical events, which began with Man of La Mancha in December
and concludes with a production of the Oresteian Trilogy in May.
The Shaker Senior Acting Ensemble will be joined by the Junior and Advanced
Ensembles-more than 80 students-in a program of specialized movement, music,
dance, and the spoken word, all combined to form a fluid, graceful, and
emotionally rich presentation. This performance will feature original works
generated through guest residencies with Adam Battlestein and Matthew
Thornton, both of the internationally acclaimed Pilobolus Dance Theatre, and
Erik Johnson. Faculty for this production include Theatre Arts Department
director, James Thornton, and associate staff member, Margo Milcetich.
Tickets are $10 regular; $5 students and senior adults. They may be reserved
by calling 216/295-4287; they will also be available at the door. There is a
free Senior Adult Preview on April 30 at 2 PM.
Ensemble members experience a unique approach to education in the
humanities, as well as performance training. Intense work begins with a
focus on physical ease, comfort, endurance, strength, coordination, and
flexibility; evolving into various areas of literature, philosophy, music,
and dance. This range of training is reflected in the actual performance of
the Ensemble.
The award-winning Shaker Theatre Arts Department offers 17 theatre classes,
produces 4 major productions and 5 showcases, and involves 400-500 students
in classes and productions each year. The program hosts numerous on-going
guest artists, including, for the past two years, residencies with Adam
Battlestein of the Pilobolus Institute and with Jonathan Becker from
Northwestern University's National High School Theatre Arts Institute.
Shaker Heights High School is a comprehensive high school, serving
approximately 1,700 students of diverse backgrounds in grades 9-12. The
faculty includes 157 teachers and tutors. Approximately 90 percent of Shaker
graduates go directly to higher education, including some of the most
selective colleges and universities in the nation. Shaker Heights High
School offers a broad program of academics and co-curricular programs,
including 17 Advanced Placement courses. The school excels in the
performing arts, as well. Shaker has been named a Grammy Signature School in
recognition of its outstanding music programs, and its Theatre Arts
Department has been designated as a Center of Excellence by the National
Council of Teachers of English.
