Comical musical ‘Personals’
focuses on dating
By DAN KANE Repository
entertainment writer
CANTON — The perilous
minefield of contemporary
dating is mined for laughs
aplenty in “Personals,” a
fresh and fun musical comedy
now playing in the Players
Guild’s Arena Theatre.
Performed by an inspired and
instantly likable cast of
three men and three women,
“Personals” is a fast-paced
series of skits and songs that
are mostly light and silly but
occasionally poignant. Anyone
who has bravely attempted to
launch a romantic
relationship, who has suffered
personals-ad discomfort, or is
friends with a serial dater
will relate to something here.
Some of the funniest bits
involve personals ads and
video dating, with eager
people seeking to condense
their personalities and
relationship dreams into 50
words or less or brief camera
time. In one comic scene, a
clueless neurotic (played by
Melissa Day) crams all of her
most negative qualities into
30 seconds on video. In
another, a hopeful woman
(Janelle Couts) tries various
wordings of her personals ad
as three men offer kinky
variations.
In one memorable sequence, a
longtime bachelor (John Popa)
happily preparing to move in
with his lady love is
interrupted by three
ex-girlfriends, who tease,
tempt and torment him. In
another, three bachelors with
beers in hand reminisce about
the “good old days” when life
was happier and less
complicated — way back in
second grade.
In recurring skits, a couple
of next-door neighbors (Popa
and Jodi Wilson) are united in
uneasy romance through a
personals ad, a married man
(Don Johnston) eagerly relates
his experiences with his wife
and an unusual third partner,
and a nerdy guy (Dan Jackson)
practices his smooth date-talk
with the aide of a cassette
tape that unnervingly talks
back to him.
A song titled “I’d Rather
Dance Alone” is cleverly
performed by the full cast,
each paired off for dancing
with an inflatable love doll.
In the show’s most somber
musical interlude, a woman
regretfully sings about the
man she left behind.
“Personals” closes with an
ear-pleasing, harmony-laden
full-company number, the
optimistic “Some Things Don’t
End.”
The show’s 15 songs are from
various composers, among them
Stephen Schwartz (“Godspell”)
and Alan Mencken (“Little Shop
of Horrors”). The singing is
of variable quality but it
works for the show; these are
ordinary people after all, not
Broadway belters. The
four-piece combo, led by
musical director Steve
Parsons, offers snappy
accompaniment that
occasionally overpowers the
singing in the small playing
space.
Kudos to the Players Guild and
director Carla Derr for
offering contemporary adult
fare, such as “Personals” and
the earlier “Women Behind
Bars” and “How I Learned to
Drive,” in the guild’s
comfortably intimate Arena.
Sometimes the simplest
productions offer the most
satisfyingly direct
experiences.
“Personals” runs through May
24, with performances at 8
p.m. Friday and Saturday, and
2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets,
$15, may be ordered at (330)
453-7617 and also are
available at the door.

font-family:Verdana'>Performed by an inspired and instantly likable cast =
of
three men and three women, =93Personals=94 is a fast-paced series of =
skits and
songs that are mostly light and silly but occasionally poignant. Anyone =
who has
bravely attempted to launch a romantic relationship, who has suffered
personals-ad discomfort, or is friends with a serial dater will relate =
to
something here. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

<p><font size=3D1 color=3Dblack face=3DVerdana><span =
style=3D'font-size:9.0pt;
font-family:Verdana'>Some of the funniest bits involve personals ads and =
video
dating, with eager people seeking to condense their personalities and
relationship dreams into 50 words or less or brief camera time. In one =
comic
scene, a clueless neurotic (played by Melissa Day) crams all of her most
negative qualities into 30 seconds on video. In another, a hopeful woman
(Janelle Couts) tries various wordings of her personals ad as three men =
offer
kinky variations. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

<p><font size=3D1 color=3Dblack face=3DVerdana><span =
style=3D'font-size:9.0pt;
font-family:Verdana'>In one memorable sequence, a longtime bachelor =
(John Popa)
happily preparing to move in with his lady love is interrupted by three
ex-girlfriends, who tease, tempt and torment him. In another, three =
bachelors
with beers in hand reminisce about the =93good old days=94 when life was =
happier
and less complicated =97 way back in second grade. =
<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

<p><font size=3D1 color=3Dblack face=3DVerdana><span =
style=3D'font-size:9.0pt;
font-family:Verdana'>In recurring skits, a couple of next-door neighbors =
(Popa
and Jodi Wilson) are united in uneasy romance through a personals ad, a =
married
man (Don Johnston) eagerly relates his experiences with his wife and an =
unusual
third partner, and a nerdy guy (Dan Jackson) practices his smooth =
date-talk
with the aide of a cassette tape that unnervingly talks back to him. =
<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

<p><font size=3D1 color=3Dblack face=3DVerdana><span =
style=3D'font-size:9.0pt;
font-family:Verdana'>A song titled =93I=92d Rather Dance Alone=94 is =
cleverly
performed by the full cast, each paired off for dancing with an =
inflatable love
doll. In the show=92s most somber musical interlude, a woman regretfully =
sings
about the man she left behind. =93Personals=94 closes with an =
ear-pleasing,
harmony-laden full-company number, the optimistic =93Some Things Don=92t =
End.=94 <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

<p><font size=3D1 color=3Dblack face=3DVerdana><span =
style=3D'font-size:9.0pt;
font-family:Verdana'>The show=92s 15 songs are from various composers, =
among them
Stephen Schwartz (=93Godspell=94) and Alan Mencken (=93Little Shop of =
Horrors=94). The
singing is of variable quality but it works for the show; these are =
ordinary
people after all, not Broadway belters. The four-piece combo, led by =
musical
director Steve Parsons, offers snappy accompaniment that occasionally
overpowers the singing in the small playing space. =

for
offering contemporary adult fare, such as =93Personals=94 and the =
