Weathervane Playhouse
Akron, Ohio
presents "Gypsy"
(May 27, 2003, Akron, Ohio...For Immediate Release) Weathervane Playhouse
presents Gypsy, a musical fable based on the life of Gypsy Rose Lee. Let us
entertain you with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim based on the
book by Arthur Laurents. Gypsy's ultimate triumph on the stage is the
culmination of an aggressive stage mother's dream of success for her daughters, and
through them, for herself.
Mama Rose and her daughters, June and Louise, traipse across the U.S. during
the early 1920s to the early 1930s - the era when vaudeville is dying and
burlesque is born! Cute, blonde June is the thrust of Mama Rose's efforts. She
takes along the older and apparently less-gifted Rose Louise. Through
irresistible perseverance, she finally gets her little act (Dainty June and Her
Newsboy Songsters) booked on the Pantages Circuit, one of the lesser chains of
vaudeville circuits located in the northwestern states. Rose Louise wears knickers
and pretends to be a boy.
Enter "Herbie," a candy salesman who is drawn along to be the troupe's
business manager and agent. He manages to book them as the headline act on the
big-time, Orpheum Circuit! But, by 1929, the little troupe faces complete
destitution with the onset of "talking pictures." June runs away with one of the
boys of the company and marries him. Undeterred, Mama Rose turns her attention
to Rose Louise.
After some aimless wanderings, the new act joins a burlesque show in Toledo.
The show's leading lady is detained in jail and Mama tells the producer that
her daughter can strip! Her lady-like manner, glowing smile and the technique
of bringing the curtains together languishingly wow the audience and a star
is born.
Gypsy is directed by Nancy Cates, with Ron Hazelett as musical director and
Jeffrey Graham Hughes, on loan from the Ohio Ballet, as choreographer. Dr.
David Spondike will conduct. Musical numbers include: Let Me Entertain You,
Everything's Coming Up Roses and Together Wherever We Go.
