What impact does the Amistad Incident of 1839 have on society today?
Playhouse Square Center will initiate public discussion on this subject
by showing the film Amistad at 5 p.m. on May 31 at the Palace Theater.
The film showing, sponsored by Playhouse Square Center, is free, open to
the public, and no ticket is required. Seating will be first-come,
first-served. The Palace Theater is located at 1615 Euclid Ave.,
Cleveland.

Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated film Amistad depicts the true story
of the Amistad Incident of 1839, when 53 African captives who were held
aboard a cargo ship and bound for the slave trade took over the ship in
an attempt to reclaim their freedom.

In the weeks following the film, the incident's historical significance
and its importance for our community today will be discussed in a series
of community dialogues called "The Legacy of the Amistad: Looking back,
Speaking up, Sailing forward." The series is presented by the United
Church of Christ. The dialogues take place:

*         June 4 - 6:30 p.m., Western Reserve Historical Society

*         June 11 - 7 p.m., Cuyahoga County Public Library, Fairview
Park Regional Branch

*         June 16 - 7 p.m., John Carroll University

*         June 23 - 7 p.m., Cuyahoga County Public Library, Maple

Freedom Schooner Amistad, a wooden re-creation of the original ship,
