Taking Direction
A course for film/television actors. – Bill Johns, Instructor – Bill,

Unless actors are being type cast, or are so popular that everyone knows
what they can do, they need to be able to take direction from a wide variety
of directors. This can be quite challenging, especially if the director is
unable to express himself clearly to convey what he wants in a performance.
This four week course is designed to give actors the tools they'll need to
take direction effectively and render a performance that not only looks good
on screen, but also helps them land the part in the first place.

Three of the four sessions will cover opportunities where an actor can learn
to take direction and interpret that direction into a memorable and
satisfying performance, while the final session will be a taped performance,
reviewed by the members of the class and then given to each student for
their demo use.

The four sessions include:

Before the course begins, each student may select a scene that they want to
perform in the final taping session. Several samples will be made available,
or the students may select their own from a variety of websites that archive

Online ( http://www.screenplays-online.de/)] (The instructor will also
'cast' students into other roles to fill out the scenes played by fellow
students)

Session Description

Phase One – The Audition

In the audition, most actors are left to invent a characterization based on
a limited idea of what the script is about. Having only a few pages of the
script, called the ‘sides’, an actor is usually given no direction at all
and must divine what the director is looking for and then conjure up a
character that meets those illusive expectations. It rarely works, and so
the actor must do his best and then listen carefully to what the director
says next. This is probably the most nerve racking part of acting and in
this session the actor will learn some tricks to get through it, get noticed
and get the part.

Phase Two – The Rehearsals

Assuming an actor has landed the role they seek, rehearsals become an
important step toward becoming the person the director has envisioned.
Although many actors prefer to create a characterization based on their own
understanding of the script, they must also be able to meld their
interpretation with the director’s so that a homogenous performance can be
achieved without those annoying ‘out of character’ moments. This session
will focus on creating the blend between the director's vision and the
actor's personae.

Phase Three – The Performance

By far the most important part of the whole process is the performance, and
now the actor must remember all the direction they’ve been taking and turn
that into a reality that suspends the audience’s disbelief and makes them a
participant in the story. This session will be taped for reference purposes
and will prepare the student for the final on-camera performance of their
scene.

Phase Four – The Reviews

In this session, each student will perform their scenes with other students
and the performances will be video taped and played back for the whole class
to review. Each student will then receive a Certificate of Completion along
with a copy of their performance to use for their portfolio or demo.

most actors are left to invent a characterization based on a limited =

best and
then listen carefully to what the director says next. This is probably =

nerve racking part of acting and in this session the actor will learn =
