PERFORMANCE WRITING/NEW WORK DEVELOPMENT

Geauga Theater's Performance Writing Program is being expanded to include
New Script Development. Writers, actors, and directors interested in
exploring scriptwriting and new script development are welcome. This course
will be offered four times a year, in 12-week cycles. Six of the weekly
sessions will focus on Aristotle's critical components of drama using
Gerald Chapman's teaching methods and incorporating elements of
improvisation and discussion. The other six sessions will focus on script
analysis and characterization as they pertain to new script development.

The course will be team taught by Joanne Durante and Jim Kisicki. The next
cycle of classes will begin September 8th and end November 24th. Classes
will be held on Monday evenings, from 7:30-9:30 pm in the Annex on Water
Street in downtown Chardon, across from the Geauga Theater.

Students will develop individual performance works-in-progress, such as
plays, musical books, comedic monologues, performance poetry, screenplays,
teleplays, etc. Each cycle culminates with a script-in-hand dramatic
reading for an invited audience. The class may be repeated as often as
desired, as writers, actors, and directors continue to develop new works
towards the ultimate goal of production.

The goals of this course are:
* To develop an understanding and appreciation of various forms of
performance writing
* To develop an appreciation of, and respect for, the collaborative
process, with special emphasis on the role of the writer in relation to the
director, performers, and audience
* To foster the creation of individual performance works reflecting each
student's unique voice
* To instill the dramaturgical and performance skills necessary to new
script development

Each class is limited to ten students. Repeat students are given priority
admission. The cost of the class is $120/cycle for new students and
$100/cycle for repeat students. New students may be asked to submit an
example of their writing prior to admission. For information or
registration, please contact Joanne Durante at jfd at nccw.net or
440.729.6481.
