Cleveland Repertory Project Presents the World Premiere of

MoonDogg
A New Suite Of Dances By Artistic Director, Hernando Cortez

Celebrating Cleveland and The Birth Of Rock ‘N’ Roll!

Cleveland, OH – Cleveland Repertory Project takes a nostalgic journey to
relive the heart and soul of the early years of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

MoonDogg makes its World Premiere December 12, 13, and 14, 2003 at Cuyahoga
Community College’s (Tri-C) Metro Campus (2200 Community College Ave.,
Cleveland). Performances are Friday at 7:30pm; Saturday at 2pm and 7:30pm;
and Sunday at 3pm and 7:30pm. Tickets are $18 General Admission and $15
Students/Seniors. Call 216.397.3757 for general reservations and to purchase
tickets in advance. Seating is limited. ‘MoonDogg’ is supported by major
funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, a government agency.

Disk jockey Alan Freed is widely credited with coining the term “rock and
roll” to describe the uptempo black R&B records he played as early as 1951
on Cleveland radio station WJW. Freed called himself “the Moondog” and
billed his show as the “Moondog Rock ‘n’ Roll Party.” A tireless and
enthusiastic advocate of the music he played, Freed kept time to his
favorite records by beating his hands on a phone book. He called it rock and
roll because “it seemed to suggest the rolling, surging beat of the music.”
The Freed-sponsored 1952 Moondog Coronation Ball in Cleveland is believed to
be the nation’s first rock and roll concert.

MoonDogg, the dance, is a suite of dances to R&B favorites like: Right Now,
Right Now (Alan Freed and his Rock ‘N Roll Orchestra); Alright OK You Win
(Count Bassie); Can’t We Be Sweethearts (Cleftones); Big Heavy (Alan Freed
and his Rock ‘N Roll Orchestra); Rock, Rock, Rock (Jimmy Cavello); Sincerely
(Moonglows); Out of the Picture (The Robins); Rip It Up (Bill Haley & The
Comets); Roll With Me Henry (Etta James); One Night Only (Otis Williams);
Magic Touch (The Penguins); and When the Saints Go Marching In (Bill Haley &
The Comets).

Cleveland Repertory Project:

Founded in 1987 under the leadership of Artistic Director Susan Miller, the
company has established itself as Cleveland’s premier contemporary dance
repertory company. The company is dedicated to the performance of high
quality, thought provoking works by national and international
choreographers – works that matter to the region and to the world of dance.
As a curator of expressive movement that is globally connected and
nationally respected, CRP has a steadfast mission to promote and foster
emerging talent, present excellence in contemporary choreographers, and
revive and honor Modern Dance classics.

Hernando Cortez (Artistic Director) was born in Manila, Philippines, and
spent his early years in British Columbia, where he began his dance training
at Vancouver's Pacific Ballet Theatre. He graduated with Honors from
Purchase College Conservatory of Dance in 1985, receiving the President's
Award for Achievement. Soon after, he was invited to join Feld Ballets/NY.
In 1987, he joined the Paul Taylor Dance Company, performing leading roles
in such renowned Taylor repertory as Arden Court, Cloven Kingdom and Company
B through 1996. He was featured in two PBS/WNET Dance in America specials
(Speaking in Tongues and The Wrecker's Ball), and his own choreography is
showcased in the Taylor Company's critically acclaimed smash hit Funny
Papers. He performed with Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project in
their 1998 national tour. Also a popular freelance choreographer, Cortez
recently created dances for: American Ballet Theatre (Studio Company), the
Williamstown Theater Festival (Camino Real, 1999, starring Ethan Hawke;
Where’s Charley?, directed by Nicholas Martin), the Sands Hotel in Atlantic
City (Latin Sol, a theatrical revue co-created with actor Taylor Negron and
director David Schweizer).

He also continues to be commissioned for new works by regional dance
companies and universities nationwide. He has served on numerous panels,
most recently as an advisor for the National Endowment for the Arts. He has
been on the faculties of Purchase College Conservatory of Dance, The Boston
Conservatory, the Joffrey School, and the school of the Paul Taylor Dance
Company.

Cortez is Founding Director of Dancers Responding to AIDS (DRA), a
fundraising program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. He was awarded a
1997 Dance Magazine Award and a 1996 New York Dance and Performance Award
(aka Bessie) for his work with DRA.

Philip Heckman (Costume Designer) is working with William Ivey Long as one
of the designers on The Boy From Oz, on Broadway, starring Hugh Jackman,
based on the life of Peter Allen. Philip has been a costume designer in New
York for over 10 years.

Chenault Spence (Lighting Designer) is known throughout the world for his
work as a designer for ballet, modern dance, opera, and television. He has
served as resident designer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the
Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Juilliard Dance Ensemble, Joyce Trisler
Danscompany, Lyon Opera Ballet, Bat-Dor, and currently -- American Repertory
Ballet. Other companies for which he has designed include New York City
Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Royal
Danish Ballet, Vienna Opera Ballet, London Festival Ballet, National Ballet
of Finland, Hong Kong Dance Company, New York City Center Theater, the
London production of American Dance Machine, and the Theatre of the
Riverside Church.
