Rachel Simmons-Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls

The Wuliger Center
Bellefaire JCB
22001 Fairmount Blvd
Shaker Hts
$5 JCC Members $8 General Community, Students no charge
(students, accompanied by an adult, are encouraged to attend)

Although Simmons is not the first to write about schoolgirl cruelty,
she treats the subject in a thorough and illuminating manner. Over the
course of a year, she spoke to 300 girls from 10 schools across the U.S. of
various races and socioeconomic backgrounds. One of the reasons her book is
so revealing has to do with the author's strength as an interviewer.
Simmons has appeared on the Today Show and Oprah as well as Good Morning
America. This is an important subject for anyone raising a young girl today.

Bryan Mark Rigg- Hitler's Jewish Stories: The Untold Story of Nazi Racial
Laws and Men of Jewish Decent in the German Military, University Press of
Kansas
Thursday, November 6th 7:30PM
JCC Mandel Building
Simon & Rose Mandel Community Room
$5 JCC Members $8 General Community
On the murderous road to "racial purity" Hitler encountered detours,
largely due to his own crazed views and inconsistent policies regarding
Jewish identity. After centuries of Jewish assimilation and intermarriage
in German society, he discovered that eliminating Jews from the rest of the
population was more difficult than he had anticipated. As Bryan Mark Rigg
shows in this provocative new study, nowhere was that heinous process more
fraught with contradiction and confusion than in the German military.
Rigg's study breaks truly new ground in a crowded field and shows from yet
another angle the extremely flawed, dishonest, demeaning, and tragic essence
of Hitler's rule. A fascinating and intriguing speaker, Riggs will introduce
new research on a unique topic.

David Zurawik- Jews in Primetime, University Press of New England
Monday, November 10th 7:30 PM
JCC Mandel Building
Simon & Rose Mandel Community Room
$5 JCC Members, $8 General Community

How did it happen that in a time when networks were run by Jewish men,
and many television shows were written by Jewish writers, there were so few
identifiably Jewish characters on television? In his provocative book,
David Zurawik marshalls compelling evidence to suggest that, during
television's first thirty-five years, its primarily Jewish power brokers
actively suppressed Jewish characters and Jewish themes from appearing on
the small screen. David Zurawik is the television critic for the Baltimore
Sun, a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Communication and
Media Studies at Goucher College, and has a Ph.D. in American Studies.
Television and the media are the strongest influences on the world today-

Tuesday November 11, 2003 7:30PM
JCC, Mandel Building
Simon & Rose Mandel Community Room
$5 JCC Members $8 General Community

In the tradition of the great storytellers from many disciplines,
Rabbi David Aaron is seriously funny. He revels in the absurd semantics of
personal growth and spiritual quest, and gently urges us to take a look at
the self-defeating and silly notions we carry In this inspirational and
eminently practical book, Rabbi David Aaron teaches us how to "see" God
through the wisdom of the Kabbalah. Making these powerful ancient truths
accessible to modern readers, Seeing God offers guidance for living a more
meaningful life and provides simple exercises to put the principles into
practice.

of the great storytellers from many disciplines, Rabbi David Aaron is =
seriously funny. He revels in the absurd semantics of personal =
growth and spiritual quest, and gently urges us to take a look at the =
self-defeating and silly notions we carry In this inspirational and =
eminently practical book, Rabbi David Aaron teaches us how to "see" God =
through the wisdom of the Kabbalah. Making these powerful ancient =
truths accessible to modern readers, Seeing God offers guidance for =
living a more meaningful life and provides simple exercises to put the =
principles into practice.
