Near West Theatre Continues 26th Season with The King & I =20
=20

The soul of Near West Theatre is belief in the healing, transformative =
power of the theatrical arts...

Near West Theatre (NWT) opened its 26th Season =
on October 3 with Hercules vs. Godzilla, an original=20

work by associate artistic director, Jodi Maile, =
and continues the season with a lineup of Broadway=20

                        classics. =20

=20

Since 1978, NWT has provoked theatre through a process that is intense, =
challenging and transforming=97for participants and audience alike. =
People from all walks of life come together to be challenged=97by =
sharing their unique life stories and experiences=97to find their own =
voices and to make personal connections with the production. Through =
this sometimes rugged and ragged process, people not only discover =
themselves in new ways but relate to each other through the medium of =
theatre. Connections are made. Community is formed. The result is =
authentic, raw and passionate theatre.

NWT is the recipient of the 2003 Governor=92s Award for the Arts for =
Community Development and Participation.=20

Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. Curtain time =
for Sunday matinees is 3 p.m. All tickets are $6 and include general =
admission seating. Parking is free and guarded.

Reservations are recommended for all performances. Please call NWT=92s =
box office at 216-621-3242.

Performances are at St. Pat=92s Club Building, 3606 Bridge Ave., in Ohio =
City (at the corner of W. 38th & Bridge Ave.). For more information, =

NWT=92s Season 2003-2004 includes:

=B7 The King and I=20

November 21 - 30
December 4 - 7, 2003
(No performance on Thanksgiving Day)
Set in the opulent Far East in the 1860=92s, this Rodgers and =
Hammerstein classic is a fictionalized account of adventurous =
Englishwoman, Anna Leonowens, who becomes governess to the many children =
of the autocratic King of Siam, now Thailand. Talking on the themes of =
imperialism and the perceived barbarism of Siam, it has vital and =
pertinent things to say about differing cultural perspectives on =
slavery, polygamy, and the roles of women in society. With the USA and =
Iraq dominating our global awareness, The King and I East meets West =
themes leap forward with new urgency. The score is one of Rodgers and =
Hammerstein=92s very best, including the songs =93Shall We Dance,=94 =
=93Getting to Know You=94 and =93I Whistle a Happy Tune.=94=20

Music by Richard Rodgers
Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Based on Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon

=B7 Candide

May 7 - 23, 2004
Voltaire wrote the novel =93Candide=94 in 1759 and slightly less than =
200 years later came the musical! Now of cult status, the Leonard =
Bernstein score has kept it alive and in constant reincarnation. =
Voltaire was a lifelong champion of the poor and the downtrodden, =
writing against tyranny and religious persecution with unmatched =
audacity. The musical is a wild, comic, bawdy ride through many =
countries of Europe and many adventures of thought: the folly of =
optimism, the uselessness of philosophical speculation, the hypocrisy of =
religion and the corrupting power of money. Join professor Pangloss and =
his student Candide as life challenges their belief that =93everything =
is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.=94 Songs include =
=93Make Our Garden Grow=94 and =93Glitter and Be Gay.=94=20

Music by Leonard Bernstein
Book adapted from Voltaire by Hugh Wheeler
Lyrics by Richard Wilbur
With additional lyrics by Stephen Sondheim & John Latouche

=B7 The Hobbit

June 25 - 27, 2004=20
Sometimes the most profound journeys are not of our own making. Join the =
reluctant, but ever faithful, Bilbo Baggins as he leaves the security of =
his beloved shire on a quest for a magical ring. This classic epic pits =
darkness against light and asks each of us to look within to create and =
build the world without.

Lyrics by David Rodgers
Music by Alan J. Friedman
Libretta by Ruth Perry

=B7 Anyone Can Whistle

27th Annual Summer Youth Theatre=20
July 23 - 31=20
August 6 - 8, 2004
In 1964, after writing lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy, and making =
his debut as a composer with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the =
Forum, the world got its first glimpse of Stephen Sondheim=92s rebel =
genius with Anyone Can Whistle, an absurdist social satire about =
insanity and conformity. The show tells the story of a town that=92s =
gone bankrupt because its only industry is manufacturing something that =
never wears out. Mayoress Cora Hoover Hopper and her town council =
flunkies stage a fake miracle ala =93Lourdes=94 where water flows from a =
rock to attract tourists. When patients at the local mental hospital, =
the Cookie Jar, escape and mix with the townspeople and tourists, chaos =
ensues. The songs are solid gold Sondheim with gems like =93There =
Won=92t be Trumpets,=94 =93Everybody Says Don=92t,=94 and the title =
ballad =93Anyone Can Whistle.=94=20

                        Book by Arthur Laurents
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
