With America and the Middle East dominating our global awareness, The =
King and I East-meets-West themes leap forward with new urgency in Near =
West Theatre=92s interpretation of this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.

The production runs November 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30; and December 4 =
=96 7. (No performance on Thanksgiving). The performance on December 4 =
will be signed for the deaf community by The Heard.=20

Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30

p.m.;  Sundays at 3 p.m. All tickets are $6 and include general =
admission seating. Parking is free and guarded. Reservations are =

There is a special preview performance on Thursday, November 20 to =
benefit Feed-A-Family, a WDOK Charity. Tickets are $10 and all box =
office proceeds from this performance benefit Feed-A-Family.

A cast of 55 adults, teens and children come together to create the =
dichotomous Siamese world of imperialism and barbarism, while exploring =
the vital and pertinent cultural perspectives on slavery, polygamy, and =
the roles of women in society. The cast also is learning about eastern =
customs, the history of Thailand, the nature of shrines, and examining =
racism and how it relates to this play.

Since 1978, Near West Theatre has provoked theatre through a process =
that is intense, challenging and transforming=97for participants and =
audience alike. People from all walks of life come together to be =
challenged=97by sharing their unique life stories and experiences=97to =
find their own voices and to make personal connections with the =
production. Through this sometimes rugged and ragged process, people not =
only discover themselves in new ways but relate to each other through =
the medium of theatre. Connections are made. Community is formed. The =
result is authentic, raw and passionate theatre.

NWT is the recipient of the 2003 Governor=92s Award for the Arts in =
Community Development and Participation.

* The Cleveland Foundation=92s Neighborhood Connections is a special =
grants program designed to assist Cleveland neighborhood groups to =
strengthen the social network of their community while dealing =
creatively with their most important concerns.  Grants are intended to =
spur small grassroots community efforts, and while doing so, to assist =
groups and individuals in the community to connect with others.  Grants =
may be used for a wide array of activities and projects, and groups are =
encouraged to think in new ways about what will work in their =
communities and with whom they might partner.

In 2003, the program is funding projects in 11 neighborhoods in two =
separate rounds. Next year, additional neighborhoods will be added, and =
in the third year of the program grants will be given citywide.
