Bring the family this Thanksgiving weekend as
Dobama presents the World Premiere of
V-E Day
by Faye Sholiton
directed by Jacqi Loewy
November 28-December 21, 2003

V-E Day is the story of 79-year-old Evelyn Bergfeld, who enjoyed her
happiest years during World War II. Following the war, she went through the
motions of marriage, motherhood, and suburban life. On May 8th, 2003, a man
appears with a box of World War II-era newsletters. His visit transports
Evelyn – and her daughter – back to a time when everything seemed possible.

Beachwood playwright and journalist Faye Sholiton traces the origins of V-E
Day to the day, in 1992, when she was assigned to write about a box of old
newsletters that a reader had dropped off at the Cleveland Jewish News. The
monthly publication known as “Hello Again” had circulated to Cleveland GIs
as a morale booster. It was filled with hometown gossip, as well as letters
from hundreds of grateful “subscribers.” She was moved by the youthful
voices of kids whom she later knew as her parents’ friends and her friends’
parents. V-E Day is her dramatic salute to their generation.

The script, which was developed in the Playwrights Unit at the Cleveland
Play House, was read in the Play House Next Stage Festival on November 1st,
before its Dobama premiere. In August, V-E Day was named First Prize winner
in Brigham Young University’s 2003 Arlene R. and William P. Lewis
Playwriting Contest.
