IOLANTHE (pronounced "eye-oh-LAN-thee") is a beautiful fairy who was
banished from fairyland for marrying a mortal, a capital offense! But
(oops!) she was just a little bit pregnant when she was sent to the
bottom of a stream for the rest of her life (i.e. eternity since fairies
never grow old!). Her son Strephon, now 25 years old, is half mortal.
"Which half," you might ask... His fiancée, Phyllis, wonders that same
thing. Perhaps that's a question best left for Gilbert & Sullivan to
answer...

For a comic change of pace Cleveland Opera presents Gilbert and
Sullivan's IOLANTHE -- December 5-7, 2003 as the second production in
the company's 2003/04 season. The title is odd but it's all about fun,
great music and merry mockery of lawyers, and of the British Parliament!
General Director David Bamberger says, "This was the first show that I
ever saw, so I can guarantee that it is a wonderful work with which to
introduce children, and grandchildren, to theatre. Yet I love it even
more as an adult! It is amazingly contemporary."

Sullivan's score is unfailingly delightful, including the most
celebrated of all G&S patter numbers, "The Nightmare Song", performed by
area favorite Frederick Reeder as the Lord Chancellor. Lots of other
area artists have leading roles, all supported by the Cleveland Opera
Chorus and accompanied by the Cleveland Opera Orchestra.
