North Coast Men’s Chorus Presents “Sugar Plum Fairies”

CLEVELAND - The North Coast Men’s Chorus, Cleveland’s only gay men’s chorus will open its 2003 – 2004 Season with two performances of “Sugar Plum Fairies” at 8:00 PM Saturday, December 20 and 3:00 PM Sunday, December 21 in Waetjen Auditorium at Cleveland State University.

The program for “Sugar Plum Fairies” will touch the outrageous edge of holiday music and also includes old standards, such as a vibrant new arrangement of three traditional carols, “I Saw Three Ships,” “ What Child Is This,” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen;” an á capella arrangement of the “Wassail Song,” and a deeply touching pair of Irving Berlin favorites. “Island Santa” trades in the reindeer and sleigh for a little red boat powered by seahorses and The Coastliners (NCMC’s celebrated specialty ensemble) warns of the dangers of over indulging in chocolate with their unique interpretation of “Bittersweet Tango.”

As the title, “Sugar Plum Faries” suggests, the centerpiece of the show will be a production of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite” with lyrics written by Fred Waring and fully choreographed by Lora Workman in classical style . . . for men . . . in crinoline tutus.

Throughout its history, a favorite element of the Chorus’ holiday performances has been a sing-along. A few tiny reindeer and soloist, Robert Burian as Mrs. Claus, will lead this year’s. Not to be outdone by “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy,” the NCMC’s own Fab Five have targeted none other than Santa, himself for a dramatic makeover.

Under the leadership of Music Director Richard Cole nearly 100 men will take the stage with its annual Holiday offering. Cole assumed his current position of Music Director in 1998. Since then, the Chorus has grown five fold. Members attribute the growth to Cole’s drive to continually challenge the chorus in terms of technical ability, showmanship, and pushing the envelope of outrageous humor.

Audiences wholeheartedly agree that NCMC’s performances never fail to tap into an entire range of emotions. As one audience member noted, “I laughed, giggled, squealed, clapped, stomped my feet, and cried at least twice. Your shows always bring out a range of emotions for me because of the music you choose; it represents life and its rainbow of experiences.”

Perhaps the highest profile gay organization in Northeast Ohio; the North Coast Men’s Chorus is an all-volunteer organization. Founded in 1988, the NCMC is a community based musical organization which affirms the gay experience by presenting entertaining, quality performances for diverse audiences; providing a supportive environment for its members; and promoting a positive presence in the gay community and beyond.

Last Season’s holiday show, “We Wish You The Merriest,” sold out. Subscriptions for the entire 2003 – 2004 Season, as well as tickets for “Sugar Plum Fairies” and copies of the Chorus’ first commercial recording, “BEHOLD!” are currently available on-line at www.ncmchorus.org or by calling 216.556.0590.
