CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
THE JOVIALITIES ENTERTAINMENT CO., LTD.
IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE CLEVELAND BLACK BOX THEATRE AT CABARET DADA
FIRST ANNUAL CLEVELAND ONE-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL
=20
=20
The Jovialities Entertainment Co., Ltd. is now accepting submissions for =
the First Annual Cleveland One-Minute Play Festival to be produced in =
conjunction with The Cleveland Black Box Theatre at Cabaret Dada. =
Jovialities Entertainment has been producing live, interactive, =
improvisational murder mysteries, comedy weddings and Renaissance =
feastes since 1987. We are seeking to branch out into more diverse =
types of theatre production with this one-minute play festival.
=20
Similar to =93flash fiction,=94 short fiction of 500 words or less, we =
are seeking =93flash drama,=94 plays of one minute in duration or less, =
to be produced in a festival of one minute plays in September 2004. =
Some examples of one-minute plays will be posted on the producer=92s =
personal website, www.jrsimons.8m.com, later this week for your =
reference. This competition is open to all playwrights aged 16 and up. =
Our basic criteria are that all plays be rated PG-13 and take not more =
than one minute to present. The specific guidelines are as follows: =
(these guidelines will also be made available on the Jovialities =
website, www.jovialities.8m.com, later this week)
=20
GUIDELINES:
1.. Plays are to be written on one of the following themes:=20
1.. Mystery =96 which can include traditional Agatha Christie style =
mysteries or any other kinds of =93mystery=94 or intrigue plays=20
2.. Marriage =96 anything relating to any part of a marriage from =
engagement, to ceremony, to reception, to honeymoon, to mid-life crises, =
to divorce=20
3.. Medieval =96 anything from Shakespearean, to King Arthur, to =
commedia de=92ll arte, to mountebank plays, to high fantasy
2.. Multiple submissions are permitted.=20
3.. Plays are to be no more than ONE MINUTE long in running time. One =
or two pages of dialogue in 10 point or 12 point Courier or Times Roman =
font take up about one minute of stage time. =20
1.. Plays longer than two typed pages will immediately be rejected.=20
2.. Don=92t try to pass off your 5-minute masterpiece as a =
one-minute play by using a small type size. I don=92t read the small =
print on contracts; I=92m not going to read the small print on your =
play.
4.. Plays must only have one setting and be able to be performed in a =
=93generic=94 space.=20
5.. Keep the number of characters to a minimum. 2-5 characters are =
ideal. Anything more than that is excessive.=20
6.. Any style of play is acceptable as long as it fits one of the =
stated themes: Mystery, Marriage or Medieval.=20
7.. NO MUSICALS=20
8.. DO NOT USE MUSIC AT ALL unless it is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN. Even a =
script using =93Happy Birthday=94 will be rejected since we don=92t have =
the money to pay royalties to use music not in the public domain. Best =
advice: DO NOT USE MUSIC AT ALL.=20
9.. Playwrights under the age of 18 must have written permission from =
a parent to submit their play before it will be mounted in the Festival. =
Jovialities reserve the right to check eligibility of all playwrights.=20
10.. Despite the short length, all scripts must be submitted in =
standard stage play format as a Word attachment to an email or as ASCII =
text in the body of an email=20
11.. Scripts may also be typed and sent via snail mail (see below for =
all addresses)=20
12.. Deadline for submission is March 15, 2004
=20
JUDGING:
1.. Phase 1=20
1.. All submitted plays will be read by the producer, directors and =
other writers from The Jovialities Entertainment Co., Ltd.=20
2.. The Jovialities team will select up to 30 of the best plays in =
each theme as finalists
2.. Phase 2=20
1.. All finalists will be notified by June 1, 2004=20
2.. Jovialities will assemble a cast of actors who will perform up =
to 90 one minute plays at the Cleveland Black Box Theatre at Cabaret =
Dada on September 9 and 10, 2004=20
3.. Performances will be open to the public
3.. Phase 3=20
1.. Audience members will vote on their favorite plays=20
2.. Votes will be tabulated=20
3.. Highest voted plays will be declared festival winners=20
4.. All festival winners will be announced by October 1, 2004
=20
PRIZES:
1.. As if the prestige of having your play professionally mounted in =
downtown Cleveland weren=92t enough, we are offering cash prizes for the =
top three festival winners.=20
1.. FIRST PLACE - $25.00=20
2.. SECOND PLACE - $15.00=20
3.. THIRD PLACE - $10.00
2.. Additionally, the highest vote getting scripts from the Festival =
performances may be eligible for publication in a Festival book to be =
edited by Jovialities Producer J. R. Simons and published by Jovialities =
through Lulu Enterprises and made available on the internet through =
www.lulu.com/jovialities =20
3.. Jovialities reserves the right, however, not to award any prizes=20
1.. Should Festival attendance fall short of the necessary number to =
yield a prize pool=20
2.. Should the audience be unable to pick clear cut winners=20
3.. Should there be any other valid reason why an award should not =
be made including but not limited to=20
i. =
Plagiarism or copyright infringement
ii. =
Ineligibility of minor playwright
=20
