Dear NeoPAL subscriber:

=20

When The Mikado, or The Town of Titipu, opened at the Savoy Theatre on
March 14, 1885, it proved to be not only the most famous of all the
Gilbert and Sullivan operas - running for 672 performances - but
possibly the most frequently played piece of musical theatre in history.

On Saturday, March 13 at 8 p.m. Gilbert and Sullivan's famous opera
comes to life onstage at The University of Akron's E.J. Thomas
Performing Arts Hall. The Mikado, by The Carl Rosa Opera, is a sparkling
and lavish recreation of the original 1885 Savoy production, as directed
by W.S. Gilbert. This production also features beautiful and colorful
sets and costumes from the academy award winning film, "Topsy-Turvy."

Parodying contemporary British taste for all things Japanese, the drama
begins as Nanki-Poo, the Mikado's son, flees Titipu to avoid an arranged
marriage. Nanki-Poo loves the young and beautiful Yum-Yum, who is
betrothed to her guardian, the tailor Ko-Ko. When Nanki-Poo hears Ko-Ko
will be executed for the capital crime of flirting, he rushes back to
Titipu, but learns Ko-Ko was reprieved and also promoted to Lord High
Executioner. Then, those in power who wish to impede the rash of
executions, reason that since Ko-Ko was next in line for decapitation,
he can't behead anyone until he's executed himself. But The Mikado
decrees that if no one is beheaded within a month, Titpu's city status
will be reduced to a village.=20

Comic complications ensue when Nanki-Poo threatens to hang himself
rather than live without Yum-Yum. Cleverly and conditionally, Ko-Ko
allows Nanki-Po to marry Yum-Yum if at the end of the month, Nanki-Poo
agrees to be decapitated - fulfilling the Mikado's order and also
leaving Yum-Yum free to marry Ko-Ko. But just as the wedding celebration
begins, a law is discovered that decrees a condemned man's wife must be
buried alive with his corpse. Too tender-hearted to execute Nanki-Po,
Ko-Ko signs an affidavit alleging the prince has been executed. When the
Mikado discovers his son has apparently been beheaded, he orders Ko-Ko's
execution. Ko-Ko then uses his zany, illogical reasoning to appease the
Mikado. And happily, the secretly wed Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo emerge from
hiding.
