North Coast Men’s Chorus Presents

ONLY in the MOVIES

CLEVELAND, OHIO - The North Coast Men’s Chorus will present its dazzling Spring tribute to the songs of the silver screen, Only In The Movies, at 8:00 PM on Saturday, March 27 and at 3:00 PM on Sunday March 28 at Waetjen Auditorium on the campus of Cleveland State University.

The show draws on music from no fewer than 39 films. “The real challenge was narrowing the list of songs we ‘had to do’ to a program that wouldn’t go on for ten or twelve hours,” said Rich Cole, Music Director. To meet that challenge, Cole turned to the Chorus’ principle arranger, Ralph Raymond Hays to create a lush medley of Hollywood’s best-known love songs, “So This Is Love,” and a medley of main title themes, “Themes Without Words.” Cole added that, “Ralph’s arrangements figure prominently in this program. And we’re particularly honored that he and his parents will be with us on Saturday night to share in the premier of ‘So This Is Love.’”

Following her outrageous staging of the “Nutcracker Suite” for Sugar Plum Fairies in December, the Chorus’ choreographer, Lora Workman has created two new dance numbers for this show: a Busby Burklee type production number approach to “We’re In The Money” and a sizzling interpretation of “Big Spender,” heavily influenced by the late Bob Fosse.

Only In The Movies is a celebration of the best that Hollywood has given us through the years. Chorus President, James McPeak reflects, “what is it about film that attracts us? Is it the experience of a world where everything is more intense? Is it the artistry, the creative spirit at its highest peak? Is it the sensuality, sometimes overt, but just as often a subtext that leaves us breathless? Is it brutal reality, or brittle artificiality that pulls us into its spell?”

Drawing on the over-arching theme of love, the Chorus chose a graphic design for this production, which depicts silhouette figures of two men kissing, set against a blazing sky reminiscent of the burning of Atlanta from Gone With The Wind. Apparently caught in the controversy surrounding President Bush’s call for a Constitutional Amendment banning same sex marriages, the Chorus has experienced the removal of many of its concert posters, which were placed in more than 300 public locations in the Greater Cleveland/Akron area.

Perhaps the highest profile gay organization in Northeast Ohio; the North Coast Men’s Chorus is an all-volunteer organization. Founded in 1988, the NCMC is a community based musical organization which affirms the gay experience by presenting entertaining, quality performances for diverse audiences; providing a supportive environment for its members; and promoting a positive presence in the gay community and beyond.

This Season’s holiday show, Sugar Plum Fairies sold out. Tickets for Only In The Movies are currently available on-line at www.ncmchorus.org or by calling 216.556.0590. ($15 in advance, $20 at the door.)
